Friars vs O'Hara - WIN 4-2
Friday, January 21st

The close score does not represent the control that Malvern had in this game.  The Friars out shot O’Hara 31-10 for the game, holding them to 3, 3, and 4 shots in the three periods.  If not for some great second period saves by O’Hara goalie, Andrew McManus, who made 15 saves on 17 shots, Malvern would have blown the game open.  The Friars came ready to play.   Mike McMullen had a chance to put Malvern up on the very first shift of the game.  He was sent in all alone on McManus but sent the shot wide.  O’Hara answered right back, on the next shift, with their own scoring chance.  Rich Kearns beat Malvern goalie, Jeff Caruso, with a nice shot just 1:32 into the game to give O’Hara the 1-0 lead.  McMullen got another chance 5 minutes later and this time he buried a rebound off a Jim Gehring shot to tie the game at 1.  Joe Testa got an assist on the goal, making a great play to keep the puck in the zone at the blue line.  He blasted a shot on net, leading to Gehring’s attempt and McMullen’s goal.  Testa got his own goal late in the first to put the Friars up 2-1.  Chris Lawrence and Jim Gehring assisted on the goal.  Malvern took the 2-1 lead and the momentum into the second period and dominated.  However, it took 12 minutes for them to solve McManus.  Good fore-checking pressure by Andrew Riesenberg and Anthony DiStefano forced a bad O’Hara clearing pass that was intercepted by Joe Gentile.  Gentile fired a slap shot past McManus to give Malvern some breathing room.  Chris Lawrence broke O’Hara’s back just 1:36 later when he skated the puck out from behind the net and beat McManus to the short side to put the Friars up 4-1 heading to the third.  Malvern went to a more defensive style of play in the third to squelch any comeback bid by O’Hara.  They held O’Hara to just 4 shots for the whole period and gave up only a power play goal.  This was a solid team effort led by four Friars’ defensemen.  Joe Testa, Joe Sheridan, Mike Illgas and Jerry Rietano logged a lot of ice time, skating every other shift, and were very strong in holding O’Hara to just 10 shots for the game.  Jeff Caruso earned the victory in goal for Malvern.

Friars vs Conestoga - WIN 8-0
Thursday, December 23rd

The Friars continued to play out standing two-way hockey Thursday night, 12/23/99, against Conestoga. Malvern earned their 2nd league shut out in their last 3 games with their 8-0 victory over the Pioneers. Mike McMullen opened the socring just 3:16 into the game with the assist going to Jim Gehring. Chris Lawrence made it 2-0 with 5 minutes to play in the first period, scoring off a feed from linemates Jim Gehring and Mike McMullen. The line of Tim Wochok, Phil McKeion and Michael Curran was strong all night, forcing Conestoga into many errors in their own zone. The most flagrant mistake was just 18 seconds after Lawrence's goal, when aggressive forechecking by Tim Wochok forced Pioneer defenseman Eric Vogel to put the puck into his own net while attempting to clear the puck. Wochok got credit for the goal, however, he wasn't satisfied, so 21 seconds later he scored again to put Malvern up 4-0.Phil McKeon and Jerry Reitano earned assists on the goal. Joe Gentile put the Friars up 5-0 half way through the 2nd period off a pass from Tim Sheehan. Jim Gehring scored Malvern's 6th goal just 1 minute later, with assists going to Joe Testa and Chris Lawrence. Then Phil McKeon scored off a terrific pass from Michael Curran. Curran is the only freshman on the team and continues to impress with his vision on the ice and his understanding of the game. In a sleeper of a 3rd period, only 1 goal was scored. Jim Gehring got it with Tim Wochok getting the helper. There were 7 penalties called in the game with 6 being called on the Friars. Four of those were called in the 3rd period. Malvern did an outstanding job killing every penalty on the night, including a 1 minute 5 on 3 disadvantage. The DiStefano, Gentile and Sheehan line also played very solid all night. With all three lines playing so well, this was Malvern's most balanced performance of the season. Andrew Riesenberg has been asked to drop back to defense to fill in for the injured Brett Landrum and is playing the position very well. This was just a terrific effort by the team to close out 1999. The Friars out shot Conestoga 31-8 for the game.

Friars vs Archbishop Carroll - WIN 7-1
Friday, December 17th

Malvern improved their league record to 5-1-1 on Friday 12/17/99 with an impressive 7-1 victory over Archbishop Carroll. Malvern looked solid both offensively and defensively, holding Carroll to 13 shots and just the one goal. Jim Gehring opened the scoring for the Friars at 8:32 of the 1st period off a nice feed from linemate Michael McMullen. Chris Lawrence marked his return to the lineup just 3 minutes later, when Gehring hit Lawrence with a great outlet pass to send him in on a break-a-way on goalie Stefano Tecce. Lawrence made no mistake, putting the Friars up 2-0. Tim Sheehan showed great speed and determination with just 3 minutes left in the first period when he beat a Carroll defenseman, caught up to a break-a-way pass, and went in one on one against Tecce. Sheehan's goal, assisted by Joe Sheridan and Joe Gentile, gave Malvern a 3-0 lead. Phil McKeon scored early in the 2nd period on a break-a-way of his own off a beautiful outlet pass from defensman Mike Illgas. Jerry Reitano made it 5-0, scoring a power play goal with a blast from the right point off a pass from McKeon. Carroll got on the board with 5:02 left to play in the second when Craig Block scored his teams only goal. Malvern squelched any thoughts of a Carroll comeback by out shooting them 9-2 in the third period. Chris Lawrence scored his second goal of the game 5 minutes into the 3rd period when he buried a pass from Gehring and Riesenberg. Gehring finished the scoring with 4:39 remaining, getting his 2nd goal of the game. Lawrence continued his comeback assisting on the shorthanded goal. Friar's goalie Nick Nudy continued his fine play, earning the victory by stopping 12 of 13 Carroll shots. Junior defenseman Greg Quinn was called up for the game since the Friars were missing defensemen Joe Testa and Brett Landrum. Quinn played very well in his first Varsity AAA league game, much like he did last weekend when he filled in when the team played in the Pittsburgh Tournament.

Friars vs WC East - WIN 4-0
Monday, November 22nd

Malvern rebounded from Monday night's disappointing 2-1 loss to O'Hara with a solid defensive effort vs. West Chester East. The Friars held East to just 10 shots for the game and goaltender Nick Nudy stopped them all en route to his first shutout of the season. After a scoreless 1st period, Sophomore Phil McKeon scored the first goal of the game just 53 seconds into the 2nd period, with the assist going to Andrrew Bartholomew, who was playing in his first Varsity AAA game. Tim Wochok made it 2-0 for the Friars eight minutes later scoring off a feed from Michael McMullen. Jerry Reitano put the game out of reach when he scored with only 15 seconds left in the 2nd period, as Tim Wochok picked up the only assist. Joe Testa had a great game on defense for Malvern and he was rewarded for his efforts when he scored late in the 3rd on a blast from the blue line that East goalie Adam Duncan just couldn't handle. Andrew Riesenberg and Phil McKeon picked up assists on Testa's goal. Malvern out shot East 22-10 for the game.

Notes: The Friars were missing last year's Defenseman of the year, Senior Brett Landrum, who is recovering from a broken wrist. We wish him a speedy recovery. Captain Chris Lawrence also missed the game with a leg injury. Lawrence was injured in the O'Hara game when he was boarded from behind. He should return to the lineup in time for the Pittsburgh Tournament, which will be played December 10-12, 1999. Freshman star Michael Curran also missed the game due to a conflict with his club team's tournament schedule.

Friars vs O'Hara - LOSS 1-2
Monday, November 22nd

Malvern suffered their 1st loss of the season to O'Hara, Monday night at the Skatium. Malvern took the lead late in the 1st period when Jim Gehring buried a pass from Michael Curran and Chris Lawrence. The Friars were all over O'Hara in the offensive zone and just missed going up 2-0 when O'Hara broke up the boards on a 2-on-1. Rob Scales sent a pass, which was picked up at least 6 feet offsides, to Gaeton Castiglione who beat a surprised Jeff Caruso to tie the game at 1. When asked about the missed offside, the Referee replied, "I didn't see the play". He couldn't have seen the play because he had turned toward the Malvern bench to avoid being hit and his partner was caught deep in the other zone and was slow getting back in the play to cover for his partner. The missed call and resulting goal swung the momentum to O'Hara and away from the Friars, who were beginning to dominate the game. Both teams entered the 2nd period tied at 1, when Malvern appeared to have scored the go ahead goal. Three Friar players raised their sticks into the air to celebrate, however, the referees signaled no goal, saying that they never saw the puck cross the goal line. Two O'Hara players even said to some of the Malvern players that the puck was in the net by at least a foot. Shortly after the no goal, Malvern found themselves in a 2 man shorthanded situation. The Friars successfully killed off the first penalty. However, Castiglione scored his 2nd goal of the game on the second half of the power play when he tapped in a rebound past Caruso to give O'Hara the 2-1 lead. Malvern fought hard and put good pressure on O'Hara for the rest of the game. They simply could not figure out how to beat O'Hara goalie Andrew McManus, who had an outstanding game, stealing the win for O'Hara. The Friars had a lot of chances, out shooting O'Hara 23-18 for the game. Malvern Prep is looking for revenge on January 21st, 2000, when the two teams meet again at Ice Line. NOTES: The Friars were missing two key players for the game, having to go without first line winger Tim Wochok and last season's Defenseman of the Year, Brett Landrum. Senior Captain Chris Lawrence missed most of the third period after being checked from behind into the boards, bruising his knee (as was the case for most of the game, things did not go Malvern's way as no call was made on the play).

Friars vs LaSalle - WIN 5-2
Friday, November 12th

A big night for the Friars AAA team as they defeated their arch rival in the Flyers Cup, LaSalle, by a 5-2 count Friday night before a packed house at Ice Line. LaSalle scored first just 5 minutes into the game when Peter Naticchione was left alone in front of the net and tapped a pass by goalie Nick Nudy. Mike McMullen tied the game just 1:41 later on a great individual effort, carrying the puck out of the corner and putting a good deke on LaSalle goalie Joe Mastronado. The 1st period ended 1-1 with LaSalle outshooting Malvern 9-8. The Friars won the game in the 2nd period when they adjusted to LaSalle's style of play by dumping the puck deep and pressuring their defensemen. Even though Mike Loftus put LaSalle up 2-1 just 40 seconds into the period, Malvern dominated the period, outshooting LaSalle 14-4. Tim Wochok scored 7 minutes into period 2 off a pass from Chris Lawrence and Jerry Reitano. Jim Gehring had a huge game and put the Friars ahead for good with 3:18 remaining in the 2nd off a feed from Joe Testa while the teams were playing 4 on 4. Gehring struck again with just 0:54 remaining in the 2nd, scoring on a 2-man advantage with McMullen getting the only assist. Gehring capped off his big night halfway through the 3rd period when he scored his 3rd goal of the night, assisted by Testa, to finish off LaSalle and give the Friars a 5-2 lead. Nick Nudy played great for Malvern, stopping 17 of 19 LaSalle shots. Malvern outshot LaSalle 25-19 for the game.

Friars vs Bonner - WIN 3-1
Monday, November 8th

Anthony DiStephano's first Varsity AAA goal could not have come at a better time for Malvern. His backhander, coming 2:39 into the 2nd period in Monday's game vs. Bonner at the Skatium, gave the Friars a 1-0 lead. Mike McMullen and Andrew Riesenberg set up the goal. Bonner tied the game at 1 midway through the 2nd period on a power play goal. The 3rd period started with the score deadlocked at 1, when Malvern's depth started to take its toll on Bonner. Utilizing all three lines, Malvern began to wear down the Bonner defense as the Friars outshot Bonner 13-5 in the final period. The scored remained tied until late in the game when Defenseman Jerry Reitano stepped up to keep a Bonner clearing attempt in the zone. Reitano took the puck down along the boards and fed a perfect centering pass to Tim Sheehan who fired the puck past Bonner goalie Frank McLaughlin. The goal gave Malvern the lead with just 4:44 to play in the game. Reitano then put the game away with a blast from the point just 51 seconds later off a pass from Freshman Michael Curran. Jeff Caruso was awesome in the net, keeping Malvern in the game, stopping 22 of 23 Bonner shots.
