Jr. Flyers Take Another Weekend
Sweep; Nab Sens and Nats.
|
The Jr. Flyers
(18-13-3) hosted the Senators again on Friday for a make-up game that was
cancelled in December. The Flyers were explosive from start finish
on Friday as they dominated Binghamton on both sides of the ice for a full 60
minutes. The scoring started early with Jr. Flyers forward Vincent Lopes (
8g, 16a, 24pts) getting on the board first, and the rest of the Flyers bench
followed suit. Bobby Conner (18g, 25a, 43pts) Corey Alexioff (1g, 3a,
4pts) Pat Corcoran (11g, 18a, 29pts) and Steve Swavely (22g, 27a, 49pts) all
notched a tally, and a hat trick by Adam Klein (16g, 8a, 24pts) all but sealed
the 8-0 victory for the Flyers.
Saturday's bout against the Washington Nats proved to be a little tougher for
the Flyers, as the Nats are still battling for playoff positioning. The
Flyers had to play a tighter style of defense and fore-checking against
Washington due to the fact they are a desperate team playing desperate hockey.
Vinny Lopes was able to once again put the Flyers on the board early. The
game remained 1-0 for awhile until Bobby Conner was able to fire a wrist shot
from the top of the circle past the goalie for a short-handed goal, and a 2-0
lead. The Flyers were able to play strong the rest of the game behind an
incredible performance by goalie Clayton Brown for his second shut-out in
consecutive games.
The
Flyers are scheduled to play a home and home series this up-coming weekend
against the New Jersey Rockets, which should be an early play-off preview.
*Flyers
goalie Clayton Brown had two shut-outs this weekend. Stopping 23 shots on
Friday (Binghamton) and 31 shots on Saturday (Washington.)

Jr. Flyers Sweep Weekend Against
Binghamton
|
The Jr. Flyers
(16-13-3) hosted the Binghamton Senators (5-19-7) in what was a must win weekend
for Philadelphia. The Jr. Flyers were searching for a weekend sweep in order to
separate themselves from the Washington Nats, and Little Flyers as the season is
winding down and with play-offs looming right around the corner.
The Flyers
were able to strike first on Saturday with a first period goal by forward Adam
Klein (13g, 6a, 19pts), but with two even strength goals by Binghamton’s Steve
Stowell, the Flyers now saw themselves trailing 2-1. Jr. Flyers Captain, Pat
Foster (6g, 15a, 21pts) was able to allow the Flyers to inch closer with a power
play score early in the 2nd period, however, despite a slew of shots on goal,
the Jr. Flyers could not catch any breaks, and with a 2nd period power play goal
by Binghamton, the Flyers had to over come a 3-2 hole heading into the third.
Jr. Flyers head coach Jerry Domish advised his team to keep the pressure
mounting, and that after awhile the goals would start to come. Adam Klein was
able to get the ball rolling with an even strength goal, and forward Chris Fink
(7g, 3a, 10pts) and defenseman Ben Bauer (1g, 1a, 2pts) solidified the comeback
along with the 5-3 Jr. Flyers victory.
Sundays
contest proved to be too much for the Senators to handle. The Flyers came out
of the gate rolling on all cylinders and Binghamton could not find an answer to
the onslaught. Bobby Conner (16g, 23a, 39pts) started the contest with a power
play goal at 13:36 into the first. Steve Swavley put home two more before the
end of the first and the Flyers were up 3-0 after one. In between periods coach
Domish reminded his team to not get complacent, and to build off of each period,
something the Jr. Flyers have struggled with all season long. The team took
notice and came out of the 2nd period scoring three more goals by Swavley, Fink,
and forward Ed DeWald (5g, 10a, 15pts.) Leading 6-0 in the third, Bobby Conner
scored his 2nd power-play goal of the game, giving the Flyers the 7-2 win and
the weekend sweep.

Jr. Flyers Move Ahead with Impressive
Showing in Weekend Tournament
|
The Philadelphia Jr. Flyers
(14-13-3) took to the road last weekend to compete in the first AJHL/EJHL
showcase tournament of the 2009-2010 season in Marlboro, MA. The Flyers were
set to open up the tournament on Friday when they squared off against Bridgeton
Academy. They would then play a back-to-back series against the EJHL’s New
Jersey Hitmen and Springfield Falcons.
When they [Jr. Flyers] arrived
on Friday, the players had a small window to prepare before they stepped onto
the ice to play Bridgeton Academy. The Flyers were able to jump on BA early in
the game. With a combination of tight play in the defensive zone, and the
forwards playing at a high level of offense, the Flyers were able to win 5-0
while only allowing 14 shots on goal. The scoring was led by forward Steve
Swaveley (18g, 21a, 39pts) registering a hat trick and one assist. Defensemen,
Dan Autenrieth (1g, 8a, 9pts) and Flyers Captain, Pat Foster (5g, 13a, 18pts)
put home the final two goals to seal the win.
Saturday mornings match-up was
the most anticipated game on the Flyers schedule, and arguably the match-up of
the weekend. The Flyers took on the New Jersey Hitmen, who were currently in
second place in the EJHL South Division with a record of 22-5-3. The game was
as high paced as everyone had anticipated, and the Hitmen were able to get on
the board first and take the lead at 2-0. The Flyers were able to battle back
however, and tie the game at 2-2 with goals coming from Steve Swaveley, and
forward Chris Fink (5g, 3a, 8pts.) With five minutes remaining in the 3rd,
the Hitmen were given a power play opportunity and scored the go-ahead goal
along with the victory, with a final score of 3-2.
With only 3 ½ hours of downtime,
the Flyers had to turn around and face the Springfield Falcons in their final
contest of the weekend. Pat Foster was the lone scorer for the Flyers as they
lost the game 3-1. Even though they had just come off their toughest game of
the weekend, and had little rest between games, the Flyers still played very
tough against a good Springfield team.
*The Jr. Flyers welcomed three
new members to their squad last weekend, all of whom are goaltenders. Tyler
Ross (Newbury, OH) Clayton Brown (Fenton, MI) and Trevor Wilson (Phoenix, AZ)
all came to the Flyers a week before the tournament. All three goalies saw
action in the Marlboro, MA showcase. Tyler Ross registered a shut-out against
Bridgeton Academy while Clayton Brown and Trevor Wilson played extremely well
against the Hitmen and Falcons.
*The Flyers are also sending
three players to AJHL/MJHL All-Star game in Boston, MA on 1/31/10. Forwards
Steve Swaveley, Bobby Conner, and defensemen Pat Foster have all been named to
the AJHL All-Star Team. Pat Corcoran has been labeled as an alternate. |

Jr. Flyers Forge Ahead With Weekend
Sweep
|
The Jr. Flyers (10-9-1) looked to rebound after last
weekends 7-2 loss, when they once again took on the Little Flyers (8-11-2)
for a home and home weekend at Ice Line and Aston.
Saturday's contest at Ice line proved to be a complete
turn a round from the previous weekends match-up. Jr.Flyers head coach,
Jerry Domish, stressed the importance of positioning and how crucial it was not
to waiver in the defensive zone. The Jr. Flyers took heed as they jumped
out to a 4-0 nothing lead in the first period with two quick goals from forward
Adam Klein (5g, 1a, 6pts.) The Flyers worked all week on eliminating
odd-man rushes, and coach Domish specifically wanted his team to stay poised and
allow the other team to make mistakes. The Jr. Flyers top line of Steven
Swaveley (13g, 14a, 27pts), Bobby Conner (9g. 15a, 24pts), and Pat Corcoran (7g,
13a, 20pts) added the remaining 5 goals to solidify a strong weekend opener, and
a 7-2 Jr. Flyers victory.
Sunday's game at Aston proved to be a tougher match-up
for the Jr. Flyers. The game was very fast and physical and both teams
registered a lot of shots on goal. Jr.Flyers forward Adam Klein once again
struck first on the power play to put the Flyers up 1-0, but the Little Flyers
were able to score twice in the first and once again in the second to take a 3-1
lead going into the third. In between periods, coach Domish reminded his
team to stick to the game plan, and to not to do more than they had too.
The advice seemed to work as forwards Steve Swaveley and Pat Corcoran put
in two power play goals to tie the game at 3-3. Going into OT, the game
plan for the Flyers was simple; to sit and wait for the opponent to make a
mistake. Just 1 minute in, the Jr. Flyers were able to pounce on a Little
Flyer miscue, and after a shot from Dan Autenreith kicked out for a rebound,
Steve Swaveley was able to bang in the loose puck for the 4-3 OT winner.
The Jr. Flyers look to build off this huge weekend as
they head back up to Newark, N.J. to take on the division leading N.J. Rockets.
The game is scheduled for 8:30 at the Prudential Center.
