SYOSSET, N.Y.—After winning just once in four
games, the Philadelphia Junior Flyers needed a strong road
effort against the third-place New York Bobcats.
As he has time and time again, goaltender Vince
Stalletti delivered. The Junior Flyers’ number one stopper made
29 saves as Philadelphia rolled to an early 3-0 lead and staved
off the Bobcats the rest of the way, winning Saturday night’s
contest 5-3. For Stalletti, it was his team-leading 13th win of
the season. For the rest of the Junior Flyers (15-12-4-0), it
was a game of highs and Lows.
The orange-and-black beat Bobcats starting goalie
Jake Soffer three times in the opening 14 minutes, with goals
from Stephen and Jonathan Low bookending a tally from Jayson
Marbach. Stephen Low’s goal came just 1:24 into the contest and
was his sixth of the season. Marbach’s marker was his 11th of
the season. For Jonathan Low, it was his 15th of the campaign.
After the first period, Soffer got the hook from
head coach Edmund Galiani. In came Cameron Holland, and the
Bobcats appeared to get a lift from the change. Matthew Crockett
and Tommy Telesca found the net just 1:01 apart in the period’s
opening minutes, and the lead was suddenly cut to 3-2. But a
pair of minor penalties to Beau Lardner put the lethal Junior
Flyers power play to work, and Jonathan Low ripped a shot past
Holland for his second of the game and 16th of the season,
bringing the lead to 4-2. Out of the intermission, the Bobcats
again struck early, as Brad Sgaraglio buried a power play goal
at 3:00 of the third period to make it 4-3. It didn’t last.
Anthony Fasulo put the game out of reach with 7:15 to play,
beating Holland for his eighth goal of the campaign and a 5-3
Junior Flyers lead.
It was the Junior Flyers’ second straight
victory, but also only their second in five tries. The pair of
wins was preceded by two ties and a loss.
Penalties Undo Junior Flyers on Long Island
By
Sean Frey
SYOSSET, N.Y.—Matt Fallon scored a hat trick and
added an assist, but the offensive explosion was not enough to
put the Philadelphia Junior Flyers in the win column for the
third straight time. A strong opening period was undone by a
string of penalties, and despite an early 4-1 lead, the Junior
Flyers (15-13-4-0) were outscored 8-2 the rest of the way,
falling to the New York Bobcats 9-6 on Sunday morning. The
Bobcats finished 4-for-6 on the power play and powered to
victory behind a six-goal second period that put the game out of
reach. Patrick Rochefort got the start for the Junior Flyers and
made 17 saves on 24 shots before being lifted midway through the
second period. He has just one victory in six starts this
season.
Vince Stalletti made 13 saves on 15 shots in
relief, just hours before being named to the 2012 AJHL All-Star
Game. All three of Fallon’s goals came in the opening period,
bringing his total for the season to 11. Sam Benson, Jonathan
Low and John Quigley also scored for Philadelphia. Benson now
has 5 goals on the season and Low has 17. Quigley’s marker was
his first in Junior A. Despite the loss, the Junior Flyers still
earned a weekend split with the Bobcats, who moved into second
place in the AJHL with the victory. The weekend set was also the
start of a particularly difficult stretch for Philadelphia, who
were playing the first and second of nine games on the road over
the team’s final 14 games.
Three’s Company: Jonathan Low Scores Hat Trick, Junior Flyers
Roll in Third Game in Three Days
By
Sean Frey
WEST CHESTER, Pa.--Playing their third game in
three days, the Philadelphia Junior Flyers rattled off three
first period goals and never looked back, beating the
Philadelphia Little Flyers 9-3 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Junior Flyers (16-13-4-0) scored three goals in all three
periods and got three goals from Jonathan Low, who capped off
the hat trick just as the game ended. Low’s performance gave him
20 goals on the season and six in his past three games. He also
added an assist to bring his team-leading point total to 50.
Vince Stalletti made 29 saves for his 14th win of the season, a
victory that propelled the Junior Flyers past Portland and into
fifth place in the AJHL.
The regional rivals skated to a draw for much of
the game’s opening period, with the Little Flyers missing a huge
early opportunity when James McNally rang a wrist shot off the
left post from point-blank range about seven minutes into the
contest. Ryan Patsch broke the stalemate at 14:30, netting his
team-leading 24th goal on a rebound attempt past Little Flyers
starting goaltender David Chiokadze. With under three minutes
left in the first period, Fran Mackin skated around the Little
Flyers’ defense and put a snap shot over Chiokadze’s glove and
under the crossbar for his 18th tally and a 2-0 Junior Flyers
lead. Just 34 seconds later, Matt Fallon beat the embattled
Little Flyers goalie again, this time through a screen to make
it 3-0 after one. The goal was Fallon’s 12th of the season. Out
of intermission, the Little Flyers showed some life. Luke Branin
put a well-placed snapper over Stalletti’s glove to cut the lead
to 3-1, but it was not enough to quiet the Junior Flyers’
onslaught. Chris Huck scored his second of the season on a blast
from the point that beat Chiokadze through traffic, then
Jonathan Low’s power play goal made it 5-1. Fallon made it 6-1
with 1:18 left in the frame, capping the second period with his
second of the game. That goal came off a pass from Vince
Nicolella after the two eluded the defense and came in alone on
Chiokadze.
That was it for the Little Flyers’ starter, who
was relieved for Jacob Wint to start the third. Chiokadze made
32 saves on 38 shots. Once again, the Little Flyers came out of
the locker room with gusto, making it 6-2 just 2:01 into the
third period when McNally lifted a backhand past Stalletti and
into the right elbow. After Jonathan Low’s second of the game
gave the Junior Flyers a 7-2 lead, the Little Flyers fought back
again, restoring the deficit to four goals when Anthony Beaumont
scored on the power play. Beaumont’s tally capped a sequence
that saw the Little Flyers’ leading scorer factor prominently
into the gameplay. Having already taken two slashing penalties
and drawing another on Nicholas Horacek earlier in the game, he
drew yet another slashing call, this time a five-minute major on
Junior Flyers’ captain Stephen Low. Beaumont scored just past
the midway point of the man advantage.
Nicolella’s sixth goal of the season made it 8-3,
and Jonathan Low completed the hat trick as the horn sounded,
firing a slap shot off the far elbow. Nico DelGiorno and John
Peck were ejected in the second period after dropping the gloves
off a faceoff at center ice. The two traded blows in a largely
even tilt before officials stepped in.
NOTES: Jonathan Low’s 50 points put him alone in
fourth place on the AJHL scoring chart. His brother, Stephen, is
tied for the lead among defensemen with 39… The Junior Flyers
are 14-8-4 when Stalletti starts. They are just 2-5-0 when he
doesn’t… The Junior Flyers have four players in the top 20 in
scoring. Only Northern (5) has more… The Junior Flyers have
scored at least five goals in each of their last four games,
going 3-1-0 in that span.
Four Junior Flyers Named to
All-Star Game
By
Sean Frey
The Philadelphia Junior Flyers of the Atlantic
Junior Hockey League announced this weekend the naming of four
Junior Flyers to the 2012 AJHL All-Star Game in Ioria, Mass.,
including a goaltender for the first time in the history of the
organization. Vince Stalletti was named to the All-Star Team
after a solid first half of the season. The Furlong, Pa. native
has appeared in 28 games and started 26, posting a 14-8-4 record
with a 3.04 goals-against-average and a .904 save percentage. He
also has two shutouts on the season, both against Laconia on
Sep. 25 and Nov. 20.Joining Stalletti is Junior Flyers captain
Stephen Low. The native of Haddonfield, N.J. was named to the
All-Star roster for the second time. He is tied for the league
lead in points among defenseman, tallying 35 in 33 games. He is
also tied for 14th in points scored among all players. His 29
assists are tied for 8th-best in the league and tied for tops
among defensemen. Also making a return trip to the All-Star game
is Jonathan Low. The team’s leading scorer with 20 goals and 30
assists ranks 4th in the league in points, 5th in goals and tied
for 6th in assists. He has 16 multi-point games including a
6-point performance against Washington on Dec. 4. In just 33
games, he is closing in on career highs in goals (24) and
assists (33), both established last season. The team’s leading
goal scorer is also headed to Ioria. Ryan Patsch makes his first
trip to the All-Star Game after posting 24 goals in 33 games,
placing him 4th in the league in that category. His 41 points
are 8th-best in the AJHL and second on the team to Jonathan Low.
The Philadelphia native has a pair of hat tricks on the season,
on Nov. 12 against the Little Flyers and on Jan. 4 against New
Jersey.
The 2012 AJHL All-Star Game will be held on
Sunday, Jan. 29 at Ioria Ice Arena in Ioria, Mass.
Junior Flyers
Split Weekend Set with Portland
By
Sean Frey
SACO, Maine—When the goals started coming for the
Philadelphia Junior Flyers, they came in bunches.
It couldn’t last forever, but it was fun while it
did. The Junior Flyers (13-12-2-0), fresh off a home-and-home
with Washington that saw the orange-and-black win 9-3 and 14-2,
dropped nine more goals on the Portland Junior Pirates en route
to a 9-3 victory Saturday and their third consecutive win. 32
goals in three games was quite a string, but Philadelphia came
back to Earth a little on Sunday, falling to the Junior Pirates
5-3.
Saturday’s game saw a second period offensive
onslaught that saw the two teams combine for eight goals. The
Junior Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Pirates got on
the board, and goaltender Vince Stalletti limited Portland’s
offensive output to three second period goals. Stalletti made 43
saves for the win. Ryan Patsch, Jayson Marbach and John Connolly
each scored twice for Philadelphia. Patsch and Marbach also
added an assist each. Jonathan Low, Fran Mackin and Vince
Nicolella were the other goal scorers for the Junior Flyers. For
Patsch, it was the continuation of a recent hot streak. The
Philadelphia native entered Sunday having scored eight goals in
five games, with 13 points in that same span. He added a goal
and an assist in Sunday’s affair also, making it nine goals and
15 points in six games. But his teammates’ sticks fell
uncharacteristically silent.
The Junior Flyers opened the scoring with Connor
Lawrence’s tally in the opening frame, and Patsch found the net
early in the second, but this time it was Portland with the big
second period, getting three goals from Nick Haggerty, D.J.
Robinson and Matthew Wilkins to erase an early 2-0 lead for the
Junior Flyers. Marbach tied it at three early in the third, but
Paddy Murphy scored with under seven minutes to play on an empty
net goal from Timothy Searles iced the game. Stalletti again got
the start for the Junior Flyers. He made 31 saves in a losing
effort.
Junior Flyers
Drop Third Straight In Loss To New York
By Sean Frey
WEST CHESTER, Pa.—Adam
Diorio opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the game,
added a shorthanded goal in the third period, and led the
New York Bobcats to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Junior
Flyers on Friday night.
The Junior Flyers (7-7-1) lost
their third straight game, falling to .500 for the first
time since Oct. 9. Philadelphia managed their only goal of the game at the
12:44 mark on Aaron Carmichael’s first of the season, but
Matthew Crockett put the Bobcats back ahead after a
beautiful feed from Patrick Schule just 14 seconds later. Matthew Iacono scored on the power play in the second
period to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead. For the game, the Junior Flyers trailed for all but 59
seconds. Vince Stalletti made 37 saves in a losing effort. David
Lynch stopped 37 saves for New York.
Junior Flyers Fall To Bobcats In High-Scoring Affair
By Sean Frey
WEST CHESTER, Pa.—The Philadelphia Junior Flyers had
trouble staying out of the penalty box. The Atlantic Junior
Hockey League’s top-ranked power play made them pay.
The New York Bobcats were 3-for-8 on the power play and
completed a weekend sweep of Philadelphia, winning 7-5 on
Sunday afternoon. The Junior Flyers (7-8-1) slipped below .500 with their
fourth straight loss. They were swept on home ice for the
second time in as many weeks.
The Bobcats opened the scoring with a short-handed goal
early in the first period from Tommy Telesca. After Nico
Delgiorno tied the game with his fourth goal of the season,
Christopher Wallace put the Bobcats back ahead with a power
play goal. With time winding down in the opening period, Ryan Patsch
fired a shot from behind the blue line that somehow eluded
Bobcats starting goalie Jake Soffer. Patsch’s team-leading
eighth of the season tied the game at 2 and eventually
chased Soffer, who was replaced by David Lynch to start the
second period. Soffer finished with 19 saves. Lynch made 31 saves for
the win in relief.
The Bobcats exploded for four goals in a high-scoring
second period. Patrick Schule beat Junior Flyers goaltender
Vince Stalletti after a perfect pass from William Pascalli.
Fran Mackin answered for Philadelphia with his sixth of the
season, but Bobcats kept coming, getting power play goals
from Pascalli and Adam Diorio to give New York a 5-3 lead. Clawing to get back in the game, Stephen Low drove to the
net on a Junior Flyers power play and Aaron Carmichael
buried a loose puck to make it a 5-4 game. The goal was the
Junior Flyers’ only power play goal for the weekend in 14
tries. The Bobcats restored the deficit to two goals before
intermission though, as Diorio added his second of the game
and fourth of the weekend on the power play, bringing the
lead to 6-4. Diorio entered the weekend with one goal on the
season. Pascalli’s second of the game at 13:37 of the third
period put the game out of reach. Fran Mackin added his
second of the game with 4:03 to play to bring the score to
7-5, but the two-goal deficit was too much to overcome. Staletti finished with 34 saves for the Junior Flyers.
The Philadelphia Junior Flyers face off with the
Philadelphia Little Flyers in a home-and-home series this
weekend. Saturday’s game at Ice Line Quad Rinks in West
Chester is scheduled for 8 p.m.; Sunday’s contest at Aston
Ice Works in Aston faces off at 12 p.m. Both games will be
broadcast on FastHockey.com; Saturday’s broadcast begins
five minutes before opening faceoff.
JUNIOR FLYERS ROUTED BY CYCLONES
By Robert Skorochocki
WEST CHESTER, PA- Coming into this
weekend, the Philadelphia Junior Flyers were in the middle
of the pack of the AJHL Standings with 15 points.
After
taking two out of three against the Boston Bulldogs two
weeks ago and squeaking by lowly Washington last weekend, a
trip from the Northern Cyclones was the perfect opponent to
get a feel for how this Junior Flyers team was faring. In
fact, the Cyclones came into Ice Line Quad Rinks with just
one loss this season, a loss to the Junior Flyers courtesy
of a Ryan Patsch overtime game winner at the AJHL kickoff
Showcase last month.
Entering the weekend, the Junior Flyers
were 5-1-1 in their previous seven meetings but were on the
wrong side of a 6-2 defeat on Saturday night at the hands of
the Cyclones in snowy West Chester. Things would only get worse on Sunday
when the Northern Cyclones continued their onslaught by
dismantling the Junior Flyers by the score of 9-0.
Sunday’s matinee started slow with not
many scoring chances for either squad. The lone goal of the
period, a power-play goal, went to Cyclones defenseman Mike
Vollmin (AJHL Second Star of the week) whose shot from the
top of the point just crossed the line off a deflection,
barely beating Junior Flyers goalie Patrick Rochefort. The Cyclones came out of the first
intermission looking to make a statement and they did
exactly that with their special teams. The second place
Cyclones notched three more power-play goals before adding
two shorthanded goals, one goal being down two men down by
Zach Popp. In the mix of all the Cyclones scoring
on Sunday included a hat-trick from Cyclones forward Charles
Bando, who potted all three of his goals a different way,
one power-play goal, one shorthanded goal and one at even
strength. One of the reasons the Cyclones have
been so successful this season is due to their balance in
scoring. The Cyclones have six forwards in the top 20 in
points and three defensemen in the top five.
The Junior Flyers road doesn’t get any
easier as the next two contests come against a team just
above them in the standings, the New York Bobcats. The
Bobcats will visit Ice Line Saturday night at 8:30pm and
Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm.

POWER PLAY FUELS JUNIOR FLYERS TO
VICTORY OVER JUNIOR NATIONALS
By Robert Skorochocki
WEST CHESTER, PA- After hanging
on to defeat the Washington Junior Nationals
(0-14-0) by one goal just the night before, the
Philadelphia Junior Flyers (7-4-1) were looking to
add to the Junior Nationals season long woes on
Sunday afternoon.
The Junior Nationals
started this contest looking like the complete
opposite of a team that is still searching for its
first win of the season. Junior Nationals captain Nathanael Rojas opened the scoring with a wrist shot
that sneaked past Junior Flyers goaltender Vince
Stalletti. Just 23 seconds after the Rojas
goal, newly acquired forward Branden Rosario would
put the Junior Nationals up 2-0 with his first goal
of the season.
The Junior Flyers entered
Sunday’s matinee with one of the Atlantic Junior
Hockey Leagues top power-play units. The Junior
Flyers man advantage is ranked 2nd,
converting at a staggering rate of 28 percent. Down early on home ice, the
Junior Flyers would look to their special teams to
give them a boost. Sam Benson’s 3rd
tally of the season, a power play goal at the 9:56
mark would cut the lead in half. The Junior Flyers would then be
given a five minute man advantage courtesy of a
cross-checking major from Junior Nationals big
defenseman Sultan Amirkhanov. While Amirkhanov was sent to
the dressing room for a game misconduct, Junior
Flyers forward John Connolly was knotting the score
at two. Connolly’s power play goal at the 2:54 mark
of the second period was also his 3rd
goal of the season. Just as the five minute major
to Amirkhanov was ending, Matt Fallon would get
involved in the scoring, putting the Junior Flyers
on top for the first time in the game. Midway through the second
period, after a very strange unsportsmanlike penalty
call on Junior Nationals forward Melvin Nichols, the
Junior Flyers power play cashed in once again. The
first of two Jayson Marbach goals on the day put the
Flyers up by two at the 13:14 mark. After surrendering four
unanswered goals, many expected the winless Junior
Nationals to just pack it in and call it a night,
but the Junior Nationals would pull within a goal
when Rojas connected with defenseman Aaron Madsen
for a power play goal at the tail end of the second.
The Junior Nationals entered
the final period with a power play but they didn’t
generate many scoring chances and goaltender Mitch
Collum kept the score close until Marbach netted his
second of the afternoon at the 9:57 mark of the
third. The Junior Flyers win was their
seventh win of the season and the squad improved
their record to an impressive 5-1-1 over the last
seven games. The Junior Flyers remain home
this weekend as they take on the Northern Cyclones
at Ice Line. Saturday’s game begins at 8:00pm and
Sundays tilt is slated for a 12 noon puck drop.

Junior Flyers Win Wild One In Washington
By Sean Frey
LAUREL, Md.—It
was 5-2 with 17 minutes to play in the third period,
and the Philadelphia Junior Flyers appeared set to
cruise to victory.
They did get the win. But only
just barely. The Junior Flyers (6-4-1-0) defeated the
Washington Junior Nationals on Saturday 5-4, a
margin of victory that was narrowed single handedly
by Nationals forward Garrett Stephenson, whose third
period hat trick gave the home crowd a glimpse of
hope. Instead the clock ran out on Washington, keeping
the Junior Nationals winless through 12 games.
The Junior Flyers scored the first four goals of
the game. Fran Mackin’s fourth goal of the season
opened the scoring early in the opening frame, but
the orange-and-black failed to find the net again
until the middle portion of the second period, when
the Junior Flyers broke out for three goals in 2:19.
Sam Benson netted his second, Ryan Patsch his sixth,
and Jonathan Low found twine for the fifth time in
2011. Aaron Madsen put the Junior Nationals on the
board just 19 seconds after Low’s tally, and
Washington struck again early in the third period on
Stephenson’s first of the game. But Mackin’s second
of the game and fifth of the campaign with 17:18 to
play made it a 5-2 game, and it seemed all but over. But Stephenson scored at 6:34 and completed the
hat trick with 6:43 to play, and it was once again a
game. The Junior Nationals never could find the
equalizer, though, and the Junior Flyers escaped the
front half of the home-and-home with a win.
Vince Stalletti made 16 saves. Stephen Low and
Dominic Puntillo each had two assists for the Junior
Flyers.
JUNIOR FLYERS LOSE TO BULLDOGS, UNBEATEN STREAK SNAPPED AT
FOUR
By Robert Skorochocki
WEST CHESTER, PA- The Philadelphia Junior Flyers (5-3-2) entered
Sunday’s matinee with the Boston Bulldogs (8-3-1) looking for
their third victory against their rival in six days, but
Bulldogs forward Francois Lapierre had other ideas.
Lapierre netted a hat-trick and
Bulldogs leading scorer Christopher Mastropietro added four
assists to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 victory. The two teams entered the contest quite
familiar with one another having squared-off on Monday and
Saturday, both resulting in Junior Flyers victories. The Bulldogs jumped out of the gate
looking for some revenge against the Junior Flyers. Andrew
Rusinak opened the scoring for the Bulldogs 2:37 into the
opening period on a nice pass from Bradley Conover. Minutes later, Junior Flyers leading
scorer Jonathan Low notched his team leading 12th
point, a power-play goal on a nice pass from Matt Fallon. With the score tied at one midway
through the first period, Francois Lapierre started to take
over, potting his first of three goals on the day at the
11:35 mark.
Stephen Low, the captain of the Junior
Flyers, knotted the score at two but Bulldogs forward Dalton
Bew would add a power-play goal of his own to put the
Bulldogs back on top at the end of one period. Lapierre completed his hat-trick,
notching the next two goals in the second to put the
Bulldogs up 5-2, but the Junior Flyers wouldn’t go away
without a fight. Anthony Fasulo would add his name to
the score sheet with a goal to cut the deficit to two. Tack
on a Matt Fallon goal courtesy of a two-man advantage and
the Junior Flyers were within one.
When Boston took the ice in the third
period, head coach Mike Adessa once again turned to his
backup Chris Paulin, and much like the night before, Paulin
shut the door and the Bulldogs salvaged a much needed win. “We have to take control right from the
start,” said Junior Flyers assistant coach Anthony DiPalma.
“We just have to learn to have more pride in our game and
come out hard and compete for the whole 60 minutes and have
no lapses, mental or physical,” added DiPalma.
The Junior Flyers will face the
Washington Junior Nationals in a home-and-home series this
upcoming weekend. You can catch Sunday’s game at 2pm on
Fasthockey.com, pre-game begins at 1:45pm.
Junior Flyers Take Home Opener for Third
Straight Win
By Sean Frey
WEST CHESTER, PA-
It was home, sweet home for the Philadelphia
Junior Flyers. The Junior
Flyers (5-3-1-0), playing at Ice Line for the first time
this season, jumped to a two-goal first period lead and
never looked back, beating the Boston Bulldogs 3-2 on
Saturday for their third straight victory.
Vince
Stalletti started in goal for the orange-and-black and
picked up this third win of the season, making 27 saves. The Junior
Flyers opened the scoring with 5:36 remaining in the opening
period, when Stephen Low shoveled a puck on goal that
Bulldogs goalie Austin Keiser could not control. The rebound
came out to Nico Delgiorno, who chipped it past Keiser for
his third goal of the season. Less than
four minutes later on their first power play opportunity,
the Junior Flyers showed why their power play unit is the
league’s best. Jayson Marbach picked up a loose puck in the
corner and found Sam Benson cutting through the slot.
Benson’s shot beat Keiser under the crossbar, and the Junior
Flyers had a 2-0 lead on Benson’s first of the year.
Bulldogs
head coach Mike Adessa lifted Keiser after the first period,
putting Chris Paulin in net—and the move appeared to pay
dividends. His play kept the Boston in the game, and when
Andrew Bucci buried a rebound on the power play to cut the
lead to 2-1 midway through the second period, the Bulldogs
had new life. But the
Junior Flyers restored the lead to two goals in the final
minute of the period. Paulin made a number of saves in
close, but Fran Mackin found a rebound and slipped it past
the Bulldogs goaltender to give the orange-and-black a 3-1
lead headed to intermission. The goal
was so big, in fact, that Junior Flyers head coach Jerry
Domish appeared to jump for joy behind the bench.
The
Bulldogs had their best effort of the game in the third
period. They were able to cut the lead to 3-2 on the power
play when Bucci banked a shot off Stalletti and into the
goal for his second of the game, but Boston could never get
the equalizer. The Junior
Flyers finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play and are
now 10-for-35 on the season, a 28.5 percent clip that leads
the AJHL. They killed two of four penalties and are
30-for-36 (83.3 percent).
HUDSON, N.H.—If the
Philadelphia Junior Flyers were going to beat the Boston
Bulldogs, they would need to shut down their leading scorer.
Vince Stalletti certainly did his part.
Stalletti made 28
saves and the Junior Flyers beat Boston 4-2 on Columbus Day,
limiting Bulldogs phenom Christopher Mastropietro to a
single point along the way. The Junior Flyers (4-3-1) completed the Columbus Day
Showcase with a 2-0-1 record. Mastropietro is currently third in the Atlantic Junior
Hockey League with 17 points, and he opened the scoring at
8:45 of the first period to give Boston a 1-0 lead. That goal would be the last one they’d get until less
than two minutes remained in the game, a stretch of over 39
minutes. Anthony Fasulo scored for the first time this season,
tying the game at 1-1 and sending the game to intermission
with the same score. After the break, Fran Mackin scored
just 3:36 in to give the Junior Flyers a 2-1 lead. His
second of the year broke the tie but sent the game into a
stalemate until a flurry of goals late in the period. With just over two minutes remaining, the Junior Flyers
and Bulldogs combined to score three times in 45 seconds.
Nicolas Delgiorno scored for the second time in 2011 to give
the orange-and-black an insurance goal and a 3-1 lead, but
Bradley Conover scored for Boston just nine seconds later to
again cut the deficit to one goal. Ryan Patsch to the rescue once again, though. His
team-leading fifth of the season capped off the scoring and
sealed the win for the Junior Flyers.
The game featured no scoring with the man advantage, the
Junior Flyers failing to score on four tries with the
Bulldogs going scoreless in two attempts. The Junior Flyers
are 5-for-31 (16.1%) on the power play for the season, and
28-for-32 (87.5%) on penalty kill for the year.
The Philadelphia Junior Flyers open their home schedule
on Saturday for the first of a weekend set with Boston at
Ice Line. Saturday’s game is at 5:00 p.m. with the puck
dropping Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Live coverage of both games
begins 30 minutes before faceoff with the Junior Flyers
Pregame Show on FastHockey.com. For more information, call

Power Play
Goals Lift Junior Flyers Back To .500
By Sean Frey
HUDSON, N.H.—Jonathan Low
had a goal and two assists, Jacob Wint made 27 saves, and
the Philadelphia Junior Flyers beat the Portland Junior
Pirates 4-3 at the Columbus Day Showcase on Sunday.
The
win put the Junior Flyers (3-3-1) back at .500 after going
winless in three games entering the contest. Making his first start in goal for the Junior Flyers,
Wint faced as many shots as his Portland counterpart Shane
Robichaud. But Wint stopped just one more, and it proved to
be the difference. “He really kept us in the game,” Assistant Coach Anthony
DiPalma said of Wint. An early first period goal by Timothy Searles and a power
play marker from Mike Barrio gave Portland an early 2-0
lead, but goals from Ryan Patsch and Jonathan Low just 59
seconds apart tied the game with over half of the opening
frame left to play. Patsch’s goal was his fourth of the
season; for Low, his power play tally was his fourth of the
campaign.
Searles opened the scoring in the second period with his
second of the game, and the Junior Flyers trailed 3-2 just
four minutes into the period. As has been the case so often in 2011, though, the Junior
Flyers came charging back, with Matt Fallon’s third of the
year tying the game approaching the midway point of the
period. That set up the finish, where the Junior Flyers’
power play had the final word in the form of John Connolly’s
second of the season.
The Junior Flyers had been mostly quiet on the power play
through the season’s first six games , but finished the game
2-for-4, bringing their season total to 5-for-27 (18.5%).
They were 1-for-2 on the penalty kill, falling to 26-for-30
(86.7%) on the year.
Junior Flyers Shake Off Long Trip, Earn Tie with Wolfpack
By Sean Frey
HUDSON, N.H.—So much for “bus
legs.”
The Philadelphia Junior Flyers (2-3-1) shook off a
seven-hour bus ride Saturday to tie the Connecticut Junior
Wolfpack 5-5, a game that saw both teams hold and relinquish
two-goal leads. The weekend’s first game saw the Junior Flyers jump out
to an early 2-0 lead off first-period goals by Vincent
Nicolella and Stephen Low. The goals were the first of the
season for both players. But the Wolfpack rattled off four unanswered goals during
a ten-minute stretch late in the first period and early in
the second. Down 4-2, it appeared the Junior Flyers were
just of gas, spent from a long morning cramped up on a
charter bus.
Not so fast. Nicolella’s second of the game just 1:40 later made it a
4-3 game. Only 1:19 after that, John Connolly found the
twine for his first goal of the campaign, and like that it
was a brand new game. When Ryan Patsch buried his third goal of the year four
minutes later, the Junior Flyers had a 5-4 lead and the
comeback seemed complete. But a late goal from Ori Benyamini
knotted the game at 5-5, and the Junior Flyers had to settle
for a hard-earned tie. “The team showed a lot of character,” said Assistant
Coach Anthony DiPalma. “To come off a seven-hour bus ride,
and against one of the top teams in the league. To come back
from a two-goal deficit, it was a big game for them. “Vince Stalletti made 32 saves for the Junior Flyers.
Both teams were scoreless on the power play, the Junior
Flyers on two chances and the Wolfpack on four. The Junior
Flyers are now 3-for-23 (13.0%) on the power play, and
25-for-28 (89.3%) on the penalty kill
Junior
Flyers Swept In Walpole
By Sean Frey
WALPOLE, Mass.—Maxwell
Capuano had an 8-point weekend including a hat trick Sunday,
Dillan Fox added five points of his own, and the Walpole
Express swept the Philadelphia Junior Flyers in a weekend
series at Ionia Arena.
The Junior Flyers (1-3-0) dropped
Saturday night’s contest 5-3, then opened Sunday’s matchup
by allowing four goals on Walpole’s first four shots of the
game en route to a 7-1 loss. The Junior Flyers had opportunities throughout the
weekend and even had a lead briefly on Saturday, but trailed
for much of the weekend and were unable to make up the
ground. “It was a tough two losses for the beginning of the
season,” Assistant Coach Anthony DiPalma said. “But it’s a
good learning experience for the kids. It’s a 60-minute
game, they have to learn to show up for all of it.”
Vince Stalletti played Saturday night for the Junior
Flyers and stopped 22 of 26 shots. The Express jumped out to
an early 1-0 lead on Fox’s goal, but Jonathan Low’s second
goal of the season tied it late in the first frame. Jayson
Marbach added his second goal of the year midway through the
second to give the Junior Flyers a 2-1 lead, but three
unanswered goals in the second and third periods gave
Walpole a lead they would not relinquish. Chris Kennedy,
Capuano and Ronnie Walsh were the scorers for the Express. Nicolas Delgiorno’s found the net for his first goal of
the campaign with 1:24 to play in the game, but David Goff
buried an empty net goal to put the game out of reach with
13 seconds remaining.
The Express got off to a hot start on Sunday, with Joe
Parizek, Walsh, Capuano and Fox scoring in the opening 12
minutes to put the Junior Flyers in an early 4-0 hole.
Capuano would add two more to complete the hat trick around
Fox’s second of the game, giving Walpole a 7-0 lead before
Ryan Patsch put the orange-and-black on the board with his
second goal of the season. Sunday’s starting goalie, Patrick Rochefort, was lifted
after Fox’s first period goal. Stalletti played the rest of
the way, stopping 28 of 31 shots.
The Junior Flyers outshot Walpole for the game 29-28 and
played particularly well in the third period, but it was not
enough to overcome the early deficit.
The Philadelphia Junior Flyers are back on the road this
weekend for the Columbus Day Showcase at Cyclones Arena in
Hudson, N.H.. They play the Connecticut Junior Wolfpack on
Saturday, the Portland Junior Pirates on Sunday and the
Boston Bulldogs on Monday. The Junior Flyers open their home
schedule on Oct. 15 for the first of a weekend set with the
Bulldogs. For more information, call 610-436-9670, ext. 131.
Junior
Flyers Drop First of Season
By Sean Frey
SIMSBURY, Conn.—Junior
Flyers goaltender Vince Stalletti could hardly have played
better.
On Saturday, it just wasn’t good enough. The Philadelphia Junior Flyers (1-1-0) threw everything
they had at the Walpole Express, but were undone by Express
goaltender Kyle Shapiro. He made 23 saves, and the Junior
Flyers fell to the Express 1-0 in their second game at the
AJHL Kickoff Showcase.
Stalletti may well have been the most impressive
goaltender on the ice. The Furlong, Pa., native made 29
saves and survived an onslaught of shots during Walpole’s
seven power plays. The lone goal of the game came during one
of them, from Jacob Brightbill just 41 seconds into the
second half.
Through two games, the Junior Flyers have been busy on
the penalty kill. They have taken 11 penalties, killing nine
of them for an 81.8 percent success rate. The power play has
yet to find its footing, finding the net only once in ten
chances (10 percent).
Junior
Flyers Take Opener In Overtime
By Sean Frey
SIMSBURY, Conn.—They came
back not once, not twice, but three different times. The
Philadelphia Junior Flyers simply would not be denied.
The
Junior Flyers (1-0-0) opened their Atlantic Junior Hockey
League slate at the AJHL Kickoff Showcase with a win Friday
night, beating the Northern Cyclones 4-3 in overtime. An early two-man advantage for Northern allowed the
Cyclones to strike first. A five minute major for kneeing
and game misconduct to Dan Shirilla was followed barely two
minutes later by a hooking call to Nicolas Lombardi, and
Sean Swansen scored on the ensuing power play. The Junior Flyers knotted it up with 8:07 to play in the
first half, when Jonathan Low beat Cyclones goaltender Drew
Case. But Northern’s Drew Lebeau found the net in the final
minute of the half, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead at
intermission. That set up a flurry of goals in the second half. Jayson
Marbach scored unassisted to tie the game at 2 nearing the
midway point of the period. Four minutes later, Northern
again took a 3-2 lead on Derek Freeman’s goal, but for the
third time, the Cyclones could not hold the lead. Fran
Mackin beat Case with 3:48 to play, setting up the extra
session. With momentum on their side, the Junior Flyers needed
just 2:01 to win it, when Ryan Patsch buried a power play
goal and put the Junior Flyers in the win column.
It was Junior Flyers’ goaltender Patrick Rochefort’s
first win with the orange-and-black. The Astonville, Ont.,
native made 19 saves.
Junior
Flyers Draw Even at Jersey Hitmen Classic
By Sean Frey
WAYNE, N.J.—Against
competition from the Eastern Junior Hockey League, the
Philadelphia Junior Flyers proved they can play with
anybody.
The Junior Flyers emerged from three games at the
Jersey Hitmen Classic with a 1-1-1 record, closing out their
preseason slate with a 3-3 tie and shootout loss to the
Boston Jr. Bruins, a 1-0 shutout of the Rochester Stars, and
a 4-1 loss to the host New Jersey Hitmen. The Junior Flyers concluded their preseason with a 7-3-3
record.
In Game 1 against the Jr. Bruins, Connor Lawrence tallied
a goal and an assist, while John Connolly netted his third
of the preseason and Sam Benson added his third goal as
well. Goaltender Patrick Rochefort was strong in goal,
making 29 saves and yielding just one goal in the shootout.
However, that goal was the only one allowed in the shootout,
coming on the last shooter. The Junior Flyers bounced back with a terrific
performance against Rochester. Fran Mackin’s goal from
Jayson Marbach was his second of the exhibition schedule,
and it was all the Junior Flyers would need. Vince Stalletti
stopped all 29 shots he faced, and while the scoreboard
showed a narrow victory, the Junior Flyers outshot the Stars
and controlled the play for much of the game.
The final game of the weekend saw only Connolly find the
net against the Hitmen, his fourth of the preseason on yet
another assist from Marbach. The Junior Flyers were hindered
by a slew of penalties in the first half, giving the Hitmen
an early 4-0 lead. Jacob Wint made 36 saves in the loss.
The Philadelphia Junior Flyers of the Atlantic Junior Hockey
League have announced that Stephen Low has been named team
captain for the 2011-2012 season.
WEST CHESTER, PA-
Low,
a defenseman from Haddonfield, N.J., is entering his third
season with the Junior Flyers. An assistant captain last
season, he tallied 9 goals and 16 assists in 42 games while
amassing 64 penalty minutes. He posted a career-high 3
points (1 goal, 2 assists) on Nov. 7, a 7-1 victory over the
New Jersey Rockets. For his career, Low has 10 goals and 17
assists in 71 games with the Junior Flyers.
The Junior Flyers also announced that Ryan Patsch and
Vince Nicolella have been named assistant captains. A second-year forward out of Philadelphia, Patsch returns
to the Junior Flyers after a strong rookie campaign last
season in which he scored 10 goals and 18 assists in 41
games. Patsch earned a career-high 4 points (1 goal, 3
assists) in a 5-3 win over New Jersey on Jan. 16, and three
times posted 3-point performances. He amassed 76 penalty
minutes in 2010-11. Nicolella, also a second-year forward, put up 2 goals, 5
assists and 26 penalty minutes in 38 games in 2010-11. The
Pittsburgh native notched a career-high 2 points on Jan. 17
(1 goal, 1 assist) in a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Little
Flyers. He equaled that effort with a career-high 2-assist
performance on Feb. 26, a 6-2 victory over the
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Jr. Knights. Nicolella is known for
being an excellent role player and a strong locker room
presence.
The Philadelphia Junior Flyers open their Atlantic Junior
Hockey League schedule on Sept. 23 against the Northern
Cyclones, the first of three games at the AJHL Kickoff
Showcase in Simsbury, Conn. The Junior Flyers open their
home schedule on Oct. 15 against the Boston Bulldogs. Puck
drop at Ice Line is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. For more
information, call 610-436-9670, ext. 131.
Nobody’s
perfect. Not even the Philadelphia Junior Flyers.
WEST CHESTER, PA-
After jumping to a 4-0-2
start in preseason, the Junior Flyers took their first loss
of the exhibition schedule, a 4-3 home loss to the
Philadelphia Revolution.
It was not for a lack of effort. The
orange-and-black outshot their Empire League opponents
42-26, but were repeatedly turned away by strong
goaltending. Jayson Marbach was one of those that found the
net, providing the Junior Flyers’ first goal for his sixth
of the preseason. Dan Shirilla netted his third of the
preseason, and Jon Low picked up his second in exhibition
play
Junior Flyers
Stay Unbeaten In Erie
ERIE, Pa.—The
Philadelphia Junior Flyers weren’t about to lose, not with a
program alum watching.
With Mercyhurst College freshman
recruit Ed DeWald looking on, the Junior Flyers finished a
3-game set on the Lakers’ home ice with a win and two ties.
They defeated the Brantford Golden Eagles 2-1 in Game 1
before tying the Buffalo Blades 3-3. Their final game of the
event was a rematch with the Golden Eagles that ended as a
4-4 draw. Besides the overall record, there was even more good
news. Head coach Jerry Domish reported after the game that
several NCAA Division 1 and Division 3 programs had
expressed interest in players on the Junior Flyers roster. Jayson Marbach continued his red-hot preseason, opening
the scoring off a give-and-go from Ryan Patsch. Marbach’s
goal was his fourth of the preseason. Nicholas Lombardi
provided the game-winner, and the Junior Flyers improved to
4-0 on their exhibition slate.
The Blades kept the Junior Flyers out of the win column
for the first time, but still were unable to overtake the
orange-and-black. Goals by Ryan Gomez and John Connolly
bookended Marbach’s fifth goal of the preseason.
The rematch with the Golden Eagles also ended in a draw,
although the Junior Flyers put up yet another strong
performance. Fran Mackin, Vince Nicolella, Anthony Fasulo
and Mat Falon found the net as the Junior Flyers brought
their preseason record to 4-0-2.
The games at the Mercyhurst Ice Center reunited several
returning players with former teammate DeWald. He joined the
NCAA Division 1 Lakers this fall after two seasons with the
Junior Flyers. DeWald appeared in 43 games for the Junior
Flyers last year, scoring 19 times and finishing with 42
points overall. He dressed for the orange-and-black 85 times
for his career, tallying 24 goals and 59 points.
Wet, Wild,
Winning: Junior Flyers Open Preseason With Wins During
Hurricane
WEST CHESTER, Pa.—The
Philadelphia Junior Flyers weren’t going to let a little
rain and wind get in the way of winning.
On a Saturday
when Hurricane Irene was bearing down on the Delaware
Valley, the Junior Flyers picked up a pair of wins in the
2011 Philadelphia Pre-Season Junior Showcase. And when the
team took the ice the following Monday after the storm had
passed, they picked up a third win for good measure.
The Junior Flyers rolled to a 5-0 preseason opening
victory Saturday over the Trenton Habs, then claimed a 5-2
victory later that night against the Eastcoast Eagles. On
Monday they made it a 3-0 start with a 4-3 win over the New
Jersey Rockets.
In the preseason opener, Anthony Fasulo opened the
scoring for the Junior Flyers and it would be all they’d
need, as strong goaltending led to a combined shutout.
Jayson Marbach, Sam Benson, Dan Shirilla and Will Vaeth also
scored for the black-and-orange.
It was five different scorers in the nightcap. Mat Falon,
Dom Puntillo, Ryan Patsch, Jon Low and Nicholas Lombardi all
found the net against the Eagles.
The Rockets made for a closer game, however, but the
Junior Flyers went back to the well for more scoring.
Marbach added two more goals to make it three for the
weekend, Shirilla netted his second of the preseason, and
Vince Nicolella provided the game-winner.
