weekend where he collected 5

he scored once and assisted on
three other goals. The all
around 1988 defenseman finished
the weekend with a plus-minus of
+4 a was stellar in his own end
where he showed great composure
and helped the Glades kill 20
out of 21 power play
opportunities. Matt, a second

Jr Flyers Team Wins Silver Stick
Regional |
|
The Jr. Flyers Pee Wee Minor team won
the Silver Stick Regional Championship
in impressive fashion this weekend in
Ashburn, VA.. Despite a field of 16
that was as strong as any we have seen
over the years, the team post a 6-0
record and outscored its opponents
35-5. Notable were impressive wins over
a very physical
Team Maryland
and a very skilled
Florida Junior Panther
team. The 95 Flyers avenged last year's
final's loss by beating the
defending champ
Long Island Gulls
4-1 in the quarter finals. The finals
matched the team against the very tough NJ
Rockets
who had 5 impressive wins during the
weekend. The Flyers were able to
shut out the Rockets 5-0 in the
finals. A shut out and goals coming from
five different goal scorers in the final
epitomized the team play and discipline
that earned this group their second
green banner to hang at Iceline ! The
team moves on to the International
finals in Whitby, ON Thanksgiving
weekend.

Healthier Jr. Flyers have best ever
showing at Marquette Mich |
|
The Jr Flyers opened up with the
Calgary Edge, a hockey
school in Canada. A surprise in
net would be
Connor
Brogan. Connor father had
passed away six days before in
the stands watching the Jr
Flyers play the
Florida
Golden Wolves at the
Silver
Stick tournament. Calgary
scored first just 3 minutes into the
game. Playing for the first time
in weeks with 3 full lines the
Jr Flyers did not panic. Half
way through the first period
Captain
Brian O'Neill tied the
game with an assist going to
Stefan
Gigliott. The 2nd period
was all Philadelphia when
Anthony
Casale scored 6 minutes
in and then assisted on
Brian
O'Neill's 2nd goal 1 1/2
minutes later. Calgary scored 35
seconds into the 3rd period and
started swarming. Another 6
minutes later and the game was
tied 3-3. Two minutes after
Calgary tied the game
Justin
Stewart scored a nifty
goal assisted by
Sean Coll
and Cole
Ikkla. With some strong
goaltending from
Connor
the Flyers held onto a
4-3 victory |
|
Next up was a formidable
Compuware
team. Both teams played a
scoreless first period seeing
both goaltenders make big saves.
The 2nd period saw each team
trading goals.
Trey
Milstead on a pass from
Brian
O'Neill scored first for
Philly. Compuware soon scored to
tie it up.
Trey Milstead scored his
2nd from
Tim McGarry only to see
Compuware tie the game again 2
minutes later. Halfway into the
third period Compuware takes
it's first lead of the game. Now
it was Philadelphia turn to come
from behind. A little over a
minute after Compuware took the
lead
Justin Stewart scored
from Cole
Ikkla
and
Dominic Manero. The game
looked like it would end in a
tie until
Sean Coll scored on a net
scramble with 14 seconds left to
give the Flyers the win 4-3.
Dan
Sullivan came up with
some huge saves on a few 5-3
Compuware power plays attempts. |
|
Now the Flyers had to face the
tournament host, the
Marquette
Electricians. Marquette
started the game slow and
Philadelphia scored two quick
goals the first from
Justin
Stewart and the 2nd from
Anthony
Casale. In the 2nd period
Marquette showed some life and
scored first but two more goals
from Chris
Gentile and
Tim
McGarry and the Flyers
ended that threat. Marquette
scored a late goal to bring the
game to 4-2. Final 5-2 Jr Flyers
on the Empty net goal by
Brian
O'Neill.
Connor
Brogan records the win. |

St Louis 3-0-0 faces
Philadelphia 3-0-0 This
game would decide the winner of
the division. The game was
everything everyone expected it
to be. This fast paced game both
teams were flying up and down
the ice ending the first period
scoreless. In the 2nd period St
Louis drew first blood. A St
Louis forward scored as he
picked off a slow pass back to
the point by a Jr Flyers forward
causing the 2 on 1 short handed
rush. The Flyers started the 3rd
period trailing by a goal and
poured the pressure on. All the
Flyers hard work would pay off.
Chris
Gentile scored on a power
play to tie the game at 1-1. St
Louis fought back getting the
Flyers to take two penalties. St
Louis now had a 5 on 3 power
play to work with. The Jr Flyers
managed to kill off part of the
power play icing the puck. On
the line change the Flyers
forward went in to pressure the
play but lost his edge, going
down in the corner. This set up
the goal winning drive a 5 on 2
St Louis rush. The Jr Flyers
applied pressure and managed a
goal mouth scramble with one
second left, but St Louis held
on to win the game and the
Division. Goaltender
Dan
Sullivan was outstanding
in net.
Tournament Wrap up:
This would
be the best showing any
Philadelphia team had made in
the Marquette Tournament. The
D-1 College and Jr A scouts were
abundant. Our parents were
impressed, all you had to do was
walk around anywhere in the rink
and see them. Tournament was won
by Dallas Stars over Belle Tire
5-2. St Louis lost to Belle Tire
6-5 and Dallas Stars beat Colorado
6-0 in the semi finals. |

Jr.
Flyers Swept Silver Stick Regional |
|
An
injury ridden Jr Flyers Midget Major
team walked through the round robin of
the Silver Stick Regional. Defeating
Florida Golden Wolves 5-2, Westchester
Express 10-1, and the Long Island Gulls
3-2. The Jr Flyers went on to defeat the
Tri-City in the Semi Final 3-0. Team
Comcast put up a good effort before
falling 5-3 with the open net goal.
Tournament Wrap up:
Chris Gentile,
Trey Milstead, Sean Coll, Tim McGarry,
and Cole Ikkla lead the team in scoring

Despite injuries Jr. Flyers show well at
Wood Chuck Classic |
|
The Green
Mountain Glades Midget
team would be our first opponent
in the Wood Chuck Classic. In
this strangely called game the
Jr Flyers played almost the
whole first half shorthanded.
But after the ice cut and
another 25 minute half saw the
opposite happen, Green Mountain
team was taking the penalties.
In the 2nd half the Jr Flyers
added 3 more goals to the 2 they
scored in the first half for a
5-0 win. Notes: Flyers played
the game with 8 forwards, 6
defensemen and 2 goaltenders
until Sean
Coll was issued a major
check from behind and a game
suspension. Before our game had
even started over
20 college
and Jr scouts had already signed
in. |
|
A 7:00 PM late day start and a
lack of jump in their skates saw
a pretty poor performance by a
Jr Flyers team. Dropping this
winnable game to the
NH
Monarchs 3-4. Notes: Jr
Flyers received some help from
our Jr B team as 3 players made
the trip to join the midgets at
this tournament. During the hand
shake the Monarchs goaltender
told the coaches this was a
payback from our 7-3 win over
them at Nationals. |
|
In
our final game of the showcase
we faced the feisty
Little
Bruins team. The Bruins
and Flyers have played each
other at least once in the last
5 years and have always had
great games. Sunday would be no
different. The b's got on the
board first as Steve Morra
scored, he is on loan from the
Empire
Bruins Jr B team. The
Bruins would take the lead again
scoring while shorthanded after
Philly tied it up on a goal from
Matt
Mansur, he was on loan
from our
Metropolitan Jr B team.
The Flyers would come back and
played a strong second half and
scored twice to take the lead.
The Bruins made a last ditch
attempt to tie it up as they
pulled the goalie for the extra
attacker but the Flyers kept the
Bruins off the scoreboard
despite two great chances off of
offensive zone face-offs and won
the game, 3-2.
Tournament Wrap up: The
Woodchuck had some of the
countries top midget teams as
well as teams from the
EJHL,
OPJHL, Empire, Met and
Atlantic
junior leagues. That
collection of teams brought out
the scouts in droves as coaches
from
Boston College, Maine, UNH,
Northeastern, U-Lowell, U-Mass
Amherst, Providence, Merrimack,
Harvard, Yale, St. Lawrence,
Clarkson, Union, Princeton, RPI,
UVM, Robert Morris, U-Conn
Colgate, Cornell, Lake State,
Army and many others.
Chris
Gentile lead the team in scoring
with 5 pts. |

Jr.
Flyers stumble in Mass as injuries pile
up |
|
The Jr Flyers Midget Major
started their season in the
Eastern Mass Senators Labor Day
Tournament. Going
into the tournament the Jr
Flyers team consisted of 11
forwards 5 defensemen and 2
goaltenders. The first opponent
would be the always tough
Buffalo
Saints. Buffalo has won
the NY district the past six
straight years. This would be a
typical Flyers Buffalo game.
Each team trading opportunities
in a penalty filled game. The Jr
Flyers dropped this game 2-3
while out shooting Buffalo by a
wide margin. Notes: Flyers hit
two post and one cross bar in a
Flyers dominated third period.
Injury list starts,
Greg
Dobson out of tournament
(back problems).
Ryan Small
did not finish game
(illness).
Chris Gentile played
hampered by a pulled thigh
muscle suffered in 2nd period.
In the final period
Brian
O'Neill bare hand was
slashed, leaving him unable to
hold his stick. |
|
Next was the
Amherst
Knights a team the Jr
Flyers usually handled pretty
routinely. Amherst was coming
off a tough 1 goal loss in their
game against the Eastern Mass
Senators. Even without a full
team the Amherst team did not
put up much of a fight in a Jr
Flyers 7-0 win. Notes:
Brian
O'Neill hand left him
unable to shoot.
Greg
Dobson was sent home to
care for his injured back and
Ryan Small
did not dress due to
illness. |
|
There would be more injuries to
follow as the Jr Flyers took on
the
Buffalo Regals. With
Chris
Gentile kept out of the
line up for this game by the
coaching staff, the bench would
grow shorter when
Bill
Connelly suffered an
angle sprain while chasing down
a puck near the boards.
Finishing the game with two
lines the Jr Flyers held onto a
4-0 win setting up a
winner take all fourth game
against St
Francis Prep. |
|
Our final game of the tournament
would be another fast paced
power play dominated game.
St Francis
scored first on its first shot
on goal and the Flyers would
have to fight back the rest of
the game. But just like the in
the Saints game the Flyers
dominated the entire third
period but failed to get the
tying goal and fell short 3-4
Tournament wrap up:
Trey
Milstead lead the team with 8
pts, followed by Chris Gentile
with 6 pts, Sean Coll with 5
pts, Tim McGarry and Brian
O'Neill each with 4 pts. Both
Conner Brogan and Dan Sullivan
played well and ended up with a
win a piece. |

Flyers Alumni gets first win in NHL
Prospects tournament |
|
John Murray
played for the NY
Rangers Prospect team in
Traverse City.
They compete against 7
other NHL rookie teams.
John sat backup the
first game against
Tampa
Bay.
The second game was
against
Atlanta.
He started the game
being the backup, until
the starting
goalie (Holt)
left in 4 goals on 9
shots. They pulled Holt
and put John in. John
played the rest of the
game and only allowed 1
goal. But he got the
loss because the Rangers
came back and tied the
game, and that one goal
gave
Atlanta
the win.
|
|
NY Rangers were
impressed with his play
so he got the start
against
Detroit
Redwings. He won the
game 6-5 in double
overtime. The NY Ranger
top brass liked what
they saw, but they
already had six goalies
lined up for main camp.
So John was sent back to
Kitchener
Rangers on Thursday.

If you would like to
read or look at the
prospect pictures of
John, they are listed on

Flyers Peewee's take charge in Boston |
The 1994 team lead by Head Coach
Rob Lewis
and Asst. Coach
Mark
Schaeffer played
tentatively during their first
game in the South Shore Kings
Tournament this past weekend.
They faced a tough schedule,
have several newcomers to the
Jr. Flyer organization and have
a new Coaching Staff. Game one
against the South Shore Kings
ended up in a 2-2 tie with good
efforts by
Greg Betzold and
Matt Menta.
Their second game against newly
formed Team
Maryland
would set the stage for the
balance of the tournament,
winning 5-2 with solid
performances by
Betzold,
Menta, Abarca and Kopen.
All eyes focused in on Game 3
against Assabet Valley, the Jr.
Flyers pulled off their first
shut-out of the tournament
winning 5-0, great effort by Jr.
Flyer goalie
Nick “the
brick” Ellis. The Jr.
Flyers had made it to the
Semi-Finals and their opponent
was the Valley Jr. Warriors, the
first score of the game came
within the first 28 seconds for
the Flyers setting the pace for
a 7-2 win with a great
performance by goalie
Taylor
Guevarez and a trip to
the Championship game against
the Boston Terriers. Were the
Jr. Flyers up to the challenge
to remove the Terriers as the
South Shore Kings Champions for
3 years running? Yes indeed
they were, winning the
championship 5-0 and playing
strong, smart and more
importantly “team” hockey.
Other honorable mentions to
Michael
Covach, Chris Diver, Kade
MacGregor, Ryan Booth and
Steven
Duda all putting up 2 or
more points throughout the
tournament. Great efforts by
each member of the 1994 Jr.
Flyers. Congratulations 1994
Jr. Flyers for a successful
tournament and plenty of games
full of awesome hockey.
