Jr
Flyers Squirt Minor Makes Strong Showing
in Michigan! |
|
The
99 Jr Flyers
recently joined 23
of the best AAA
clubs from across
North America and
Canada at the
Little Caesars
Invitational in Troy
Michigan.
Early on, the Jr
Flyers established
themselves as one of
the teams to beat by
blanking the
Toronto Red Wings
5-0. Building on
their early
momentum, the 99's
continued to post
two more shut-outs
with their
smothering defense
and great
goaltending from
Jason Grande
against
Little Caesars
and
York Simcoe Express.
They become the only
team to post
shut-outs in all
three preliminary
games and one of
only two teams to
win all three of
there preliminary
games. |
 |
|
In their first
play-off game, local
favorite
Victory Honda
became the first
team to score
against the Jr.
Flyers, in a battle
that ended in a 2-2
tie after
regulation. However,
thirty seconds into
overtime
Jordan Seyfert
ended the suspense
with the game winner
that made the Jr
Flyers the sole
remaining US team in
the tournament.
Early the next
morning, the 99's
found themselves in
a dogfight after
letting-up two early
goals to the
Vaughn Kings.
A quick goal at the
beginning of the
third period seemed
to turn the momentum
towards the Jr
Flyers, but Vaughn
fought back the Jr
Flyers relentless
attack and held on
for a 3-2 victory to
end the Jr Flyers
run. Although the
loss kept the Jr
Flyers from reaching
their goal of a
championship, their
play against the
elite competition
was another step
toward establishing
themselves as one of
the premier squirt
minor teams.

Junior Flyer Bantam Minors Enjoy Solid
Run at 2008 Nike/Bauer Invite |
|
The
Junior Flyer 1995's
had an
impressive showing
in the annual
Nike/Bauer Invite in
Chicago this
past Halloween
Weekend. The Flyers
earned the top seed
in the preliminaries
by posting victories
against
Wisconsin Fire
3-2 and
Markham Majors
2-1 on Friday 10/31,
then tying
Detroit Compuware
1-1 to solidify the
birth to the round
of 16 playoffs where
they eliminated the
NJ Avalanche
5-3 to advance to
the semis. Although
Canada's # 2 Ranked
95 team, Welland
Tigers, were
resilient to the
pressure applied by
the Flyers and
defeated them 3-0
in the shortened
semis, it was a
solid effort by the
squad and a very
positive weekend
overall. |
|
The tournament
opened with the JF
facing a top 5
ranked US team from
last season,
Wisconsin Fire.
The Junior Flyers
opened the scoring
on the Fire on a
blast by
Travis Kauffman
(asst Greg Betzold)
with 42 seconds
remaining in the
first period.
Wisconsin's Taylor
Cammarata
(#12) evened the
scoring 3 minutes
into the second,
however after a
beautiful move and
hard wrist shot from
pointman
Mike Pascali, Ryan
Williams
deflected the shot
to the twine behind
Wisconsin netminder,
Brandan Evers
to regain the lead.
The high scoring
second continued by
Wisconsin's
Cammarata
netting his second
of the period to tie
the game on the
power play. This
proved to be
Wisconsin's last
tally of the game
and Junior Flyers
Captain,
Greg Betzold
finished off the
scoring after a feed
by
Aaron Hanna
with 3:43 left in
the second. The
Flyers then played
solid defense during
the remainder of the
game along with
great goaltending by
Andy Shesko
(20 saves) to seal
the victory. The
coaches were pleased
with the fact that
their team never
took a shift off
during the game and
reaped the rewards
of hard work. |
|
That evening the
team faced the
Markham Majors who
were 0-1 as well
after their
preliminary 1-2
defeat against
Compuware.
The Junior Flyers
controlled the play
early, however it
was Markham that
capitalized on a
breakdown in the
Flyers zone and
scored from all
alone in the slot on
netminder
Brendan Colgan
with two minutes
left in the first.
The second period
was a test of the
Flyers penalty
killing which was
outstanding
throughout the
tournament. The
turning point came
after killing off a
5 minute major that
was followed
immediately by an
additional minor.
Forward
Gus Diana,
after a shift change
from the bench,
drove hard to the
net and punched a
rebound past goal
keeper
Jordan Dekort
to tie the game up
at 5:56 in the
second period.
Momentum remained on
the side of the
Flyers who continued
to grind and outwork
the opposing Markham
squad.
Dwyer Tschantz
sniped the game into
the Flyers favor by
ripping a wrister
past the Markham
goaltender (assists
to
Colton McMenamin
and
Eric Carerras).
Once again, more
solid goaltending
from the Flyers with
Colgan turning away
19 of the 20 shots
delivered to the
net. |
|
The final preliminary
game was a rematch
from September in
Detroit last year
where the JF 95's
faced the hard
hitting
Compuware
squad. This game was
much closer than the
8-4 Flyers victory
from a year before
against the much
improved opponent.
The game ended 1-1
with the only Flyers
goal coming on a
power play.
Travis Kauffman
feathered a stretch
saucer pass up the
middle of the ice to
spring
Tschantz
on a breakaway.
Tschantz
made no mistake and
beat the Compuware
goaltender for the
first period lead.
The Flyers appeared
to take their foot
off the gas and
allowed a tying goal
behind
Shesko
early in the
third.....and that's
how the scoring
ended. |
|
The 5 points in the
preliminary round
robin gave the
Junior Flyers
the top seed in
their division and
it was on to the
Sweet 16 that
evening against the
NJ Avalanche.
The Aves
Nicholas Picinic
started the scoring
off on an early
power play at the
13:39 mark of the
first period.
Chad Otterman
added to their lead
by chipping a puck
past
Colgan
for their second of
the period in less
than a minute and a
half after the
first.
Brett Supinski
would have none of
that and scored with
5:45 left in the
first on the rebound
from a
Kauffman
blast to bring the
game within 1. The
Aves scored one more
(Bowen) prior to
Betzold's
second of the
tournament that came
after a crafty feed
from
Supinski
in a play that was
started with the
extra effort of
John Maniscalco.
The exciting first
period ended 3-2. It
was at that point
that the Flyers bore
down and shut down
the Aves offense
with great defense
capped off with a
flurry of goal
scoring started by
Ryan Walters
scoring from the
point to tie the
game in the second.
Gus Diana
scored the go ahead
in the third with
added insurance by
Greg Betzold's
second of the night
after a goal saving
backcheck by
George Garris.
The Flyers 4
unanswered goals
advanced them to the
quarter finals with
a 5-3 victory. |
|
In the Quarter Finals
the Flyers faced the
fast paced
Welland Tigers.
Assistant coach,
Mike Mould,
grew up facing
Welland on the
frozen fields of
Brampton, Ontario
and took this game
personal.
Unfortunately,
Welland jumped on
top early with goals
at 5:36 in the
first, 5:09 and 3:13
in the second.
Although the Junior
Flyers poured on the
pressure by
outshooting Welland
8-3 in third, they
ran out of time on
the clock and the
tournament was over
for the team.
Notable in the game
was the offensive
playmaking of
Evan Williams;
unfortunately
Welland's goaltender
allowed no rewards
to be reaped on this
day.Overall, an
impressive and
gritty tournament
effort by the 95's
who proved that with
their skill and a
workmanlike
attitude, they can
accomplish great
things together. |

victory in
their Friday
game against
ECHL
opponent,
SUNY
Canton. Jacob

first ten
minutes of
the second
period
to open up a
5-2 lead. He
continued to
contribute
offensively
on Saturday
picking up
two assists
in a 5-2

during the
weekend

Jr. Flyers Midgets
have Great Showing in Jr. Bruins
Shootout! |
|
The
Midget Major 18U
team started the
tournament with a
5-1 win over
Boston Advantage.
Stopping in to watch
the game was the
Yale varsity
Coach. He was
overheard talking to
the other coaches
with him stating
"This is the team
O'Neill came from"
that he wanted to
check out the game.
|
|
The
Midget 16U
team was busy
winning their own
game over
West Coast Hockey
club 2-1.
There was not much
time to celebrate
with less than 6
hours before game
number two. The Jr
Flyers 16U team
needed to quickly
eat and return to
the hotel for some
rest before facing
the
Boston Advantage 16U
team. This would be
the Boston's team
first game of the
day. The 16U team
scored the only goal
of the game for a
rare 1-0 win. |
|
The
Midget 18U
team had 6 1/2 hours
between games before
facing off with the
Cape Cod Whales
of the
Mass Select League.
This was one of the
18U teams best games
of the tournament.
The out come of this
up and down contest
was a 1-1 tie. Over
a dozen college
coaches were
entertained watching
this game. Just as
with the 16U team
the 18U team 2nd
game was played
against a fresh 1st
game team.
|
|
The
Jr Flyers midget
teams would
now gain the
advantage in
scheduling by
playing their first
games of the day
against opponents
that have already
played a game. The
16U started off
first by defeating
the
Connecticut Chiefs
4-1 while a little
while later the
midget 18U defeated
the winless
Boston Jr Eagles
4-0 in a penalty
filled game. |
|
Both
Jr Flyers teams
were eliminated in
the quarter finals.
The 16U team played
first and lost a
tough match 1-0 to
the
Rochester Alliance.
The 18U team didn't
fair any better
losing to the
South Shores
Dynamos' 3-1
(Open Net). The
Dynamos'
would be knocked out
in OT by the 19U
winner the
Little Bruins
and the
Rochester Alliance
was defeated by the
16U tournament
winner the
Long Island Gulls. |
|
Notes: The
tournament was
loaded with
NHL, college and
Junior scouts.
Forward
Dave Macalino
and Defenseman
Donald Olivieri
have been
contacted by college
coaches for next
year as a result of
their play in this
tournament and the
previous showcase in
Vermont.
