"It is definitely an honor
for sure," said Christie after receiving the news
of his top selection. "It feels great but I know there is
a lot more work to do." The 19-year-old from West Chester, Pennsylvania was a
point-per-game player this season as he collected 57 points
(20g, 37a) in 57 regular season games for the Topeka RoadRunners
of the North American Hockey
League (NAHL). Six of his goals were game-winners as he
helped Topeka earn the regular season championship by posting a
league-best record of 43-12-3 (89 points). Christie tied for
the NAHL lead with a plus-38 rating. He also put up 11 points
(4g, 7a) in 13 playoff games before Topeka was eliminated from
the postseason.
"We are excited to have
Brian as the number one pick," said Scott McConnell,
Chicago Steel Head Coach/GM. "Brian
brings us experience having success this past season in a good
league. He is battle tested and has received excellent coaching
from the Topeka staff." The 6-2, 180-pound forward
was described by one USHL scout as a "good-sized centerman who skates well and protects the
puck while also is not afraid to go to the dirty areas of the
ice and is strong in front of the net."
Christie is excited to begin his USHL career and will soon
start his training for the 2011-12 season
as he knows the jump to the USHL level is his next challenge.
"I have always been told the USHL
is the top league and how hard it is to make it on teams like
that. It is exciting." Growing up near
Philadelphia, it is no surprise that Christie is a
self-described "huge Philadelphia
Flyers fan" and hopes to someday live out the dream
of playing in the NHL. As a youth, he was part of the Jr. Flyers hockey program. Christie
also has college hockey plans for his future as he is committed
to attend Merrimack College
following his junior hockey career. Other Jr Flyers Alumni selected in the USHL
draft was Des Moines Bucs
fifth-round pick, Connor Varley, a defenseman out of
Lansdale, and a 16th-round selection by the DuBuque Fighting Saints John Furgele,
a defender out of Glen Mills.

I Men’s Ice Hockey East Regional, as they were defeated 5-3. The
Sewell, New Jersey native appeared in 114 career games with the
Bulldogs, recording eight goals and 31 assists for 39 points.

Flyers Alumni Brian Christie Committs
to Merimack!
|
|

|
Current
Topeka Road Runners Brian Christie committed to
play Division I hockey for Merrimack College. Christie will
join Merrimack in the Fall of 2013.
|
|
Brian Christie, a 6'2" 180 lb
forward from West Chester, PA (about 45 minutes west of
Philadelphia) is third on his team in scoring with 43
points at the time of his commitment, but leads the team in
both plus/minus at +31, and in shot percentage, with an
impressive .224. He also has a point in 9 of his last 10
games. It was a recent campus visit that convinced him to
choose Merrimack.
"During my visit I had a good feel on campus",
Christie said. "The biggest thing for me was the
coaching staff. I really liked the whole staff they
are definitely coaches I want to play for."
As far as his major, he hasn't singled one out but intends
to focus on some area of business. He acknowledges his
coaches in Topeka for helping him prepare for the next
level. "They have been pushing me all season to
develop my game, and put me in good situations to succeed.
I could not credit them more." With his college
future secured, Christie feels he can concentrate more on
team goals. "This gives me the opportunity to fully
focus on our goal of winning the Robertson Cup, and I could
not be more excited to make our run at it." He
continues to enjoy playing in Topeka. " I
enjoy all the people that work with the team and that are
involved with the organization. The fans here in Topeka
couldn't be more supportive of us as well. It truly makes
it fun to play here." Head Coach Scott Langer says of
Christie, "Brian is a player that does so many little
things well, and he makes others around him better.
Merrimack is getting a quality hockey player in Brian
Christie."
|
|
The Merrimack Warriors play in NCAA Division I Hockey East. Head
Coach Mark Dennehy
recently signed a contract extension through 2016. Hussar
and Christie will reunite with RoadRunner
goalie Rasmus
Tirronen
who earlier this season committed to Merrimack for Fall
2011.

Jackee Snikeris Named ECAC Hockey
Goaltender of the Year
|
|
First Yale Player to Win Award!
|
|
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior goaltender Jackee Snikeris
(Downingtown, Pa.) was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender
of the Year on Tuesday, becoming the first Yale player to
earn that award. She adds this accomplishment to the other
honors she has already received this season, including
first team All-ECAC Hockey and first team All-Ivy League,
while also awaiting word later in the week about the ECAC
Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Award for which she is
one of three finalists. She is also a nominee for the Kazmaier
Award as the top player in women’s college hockey. Snikeris
posted some of the most remarkable numbers of her stellar
career this past season, highlighted by her .941 save
percentage that currently has her ranked seventh in the
country. That figure set the school record in that
category, and gives her four of the top eight single-season
save percentage marks in Yale history. Her 1.98
goals-against average this season ranks third, trailing
only her own 1.67 mark
from 2008-09 and the 1.978 mark posted by June Mendoza ’80
in 1978-79. Snikeris
has four of the top seven single-season goals-against
averages in Yale history.
|
|
The ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year is
determined by a vote of the league’s 12 coaches.
