1998 Jr Flyers Win
Another Championship! |
 |
|
98 DIVISION
Final Game:
Philadelphia Jr.
Flyers 3, Valley Jr.
Warriors Elite 2
The final game featured the Valley Jr.
Warriors
against the
Philadelphia Jr.
Flyers. It
was a back-and-forth
battle from the
start as neither
team wanted to give
up the title! The
Warriors struck
first with a goal at
the 9:31 mark of the
first period off the
stick of
John Folsom.
The Flyers drew even
in the second period
thanks to a goal by
Connor Leighton.
The Warriors
responded just 26
seconds later when
Brandon Lafata
scored to give his
team a one-goal
lead! The Flyers
went on to score two
unanswered goals
from that point on,
however. It was
Kyle Fiore
off a feed from
Ed Russell
who lit the lamp at
the 1:01 mark of the
second period to
even things up
heading into the
third period.
Fiore and Russell
paired up again in
the same manner with
the game winner with
just seven minutes
left in the game.
The Warriors had
several solid
scoring chances in
the game’s final
moments but were
unable to capitalize
as the Flyers skated
to an exciting 3-2
win. |

1994 Jr Flyers
Champions Again! |
 |
|
94 DIVISION
Final Game:
Philadelphia Jr.
Flyers 4, Valley Jr.
Warriors Elite 3
Just when overtime appeared imminent, the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers
found a way to win
with just 38 ticks
left on the game
clock. The Flyers
had battled the
Valley Jr. Warriors
Elite all
game long and
captured the ’94
title thanks to a
goal by
Michael Covach
in the final
seconds of
regulation. Leading
up to that dramatic
ending, the teams
had exchanged leads
all game long. The
Warriors jumped on
the board first
after a goal by
Dan Doherty
at the 11:05 mark of
the first period.
Travis Acker
and
CJ Sturges
scored in a span of
2:31 for the Flyers
to snatch a 2-1
lead. The advantage
was short lived as
Casey Shea
found the back of
the net to even the
contest once again.
After a scoreless
third period, the
Flyers took a lead (Matthew
Menta was the
scorer) only to have
the Warriors counter
less than 40 seconds
later courtesy of a
Sam Kurker
tally! With only six
minutes left in the
game, the teams
exchanged good
scoring chances only
to have
Covach seal
the deal for the
Flyers and give them
the 4-3 win. |
|
The Valley Jr.
Warriors Elite and
Philadelphia Jr.
Flyers made sure
there was no doubt
as to what teams
would face off in
the division finals.
The Warriors were
dominating in their
8-1 semifinal win
against the
Seacoast Spartans.
In that game, Nick
Owen and Sam Kurker
both finished with
two goals and one
assist. The Flyers,
meanwhile, came off
a scoreless first
period by scoring
four goals in the
second period to
break out to a 4-2
lead. The team –
spearheaded by six
different scorers –
claimed a 6-3
victory and a chance
to meet the Warriors
in the afternoon
finals. |

Another Jr. Flyers Alumni to play
professionally. |
|
|
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -
Brandon Jackmuff
'08 has signed a contract to play
professionally in the
Oberliga in Germany with Herne Eissport
Verein 2007.
The Oberliga is the third level of
professional play in Germany. |
|
Jackmuff (West
Deptford, NJ) was a four-year letterman
for the Ephs at forward and led the team
in goals (12) and assists (13) and
points (25) in 2007-08. He earned Second
Team All-NESCAC honors as a senior. In
his eph career Jackmuff netted 49 goals
and assisted on 33 for 82 points in 93
games. |
|
Brandon is one of
four non-Europeans allowed on a team
roster and he will be playing alongside
former NESCAC foe Tom Maldonado who was
the captain of the team at Middlebury
last season. |
|
"I'm
not necessarily trying to make a career
out of hockey but I couldn't see passing
up such an amazing opportunity,"
said Jackmuff.
"This will be the first time that I
can focus on just hockey and not have to
worry about school, working, or anything
else, so I am excited to see how the
first year goes. The fact that I'll be
in Europe doesn't hurt." |
|
The games in the
Oberliga will be played on an
Olympic-size ice sheet, which is wider
and longer than the Williams ice sheet
and most Division 3 sheets. "I expect
the players to be both more skilled and
faster in Europe than what I have played
against the past four years in Division
3," said Jackmuff. " I'm extremely
anxious and excited to get over there
and get on the ice." |
 |
|
Brandon's contract with Herne Eissport
Verein 2007 includes travel
arrangements, car, apartment, salary and
runs through March.
"The situation is the best I could've
hoped for coming out of Division 3 and
having had no prior pro or European
hockey experience under my belt." |

Jr. Flyers 18U
Finalist at EJHL Summer Showcase |
|
Malboro, MA- The New
Hampshire Monarchs Jr's defeated the
Philadelphia Junior Flyers 3-0 to win
the 2008 Eastern Summer Showcase. |
|
The Jr Flyers
opened the tournament with a 9-2 win
over the Capital
District Selects #2 team, mostly
Empire League players. The second game
of the round was another 9-0 blowout of
the Ct Wings,
an independent Jr aged team. The
Wings would
win their division and lose a play in
mini game against
Tri State Selects 4-0. The third
game of the round would be a 5-1 win
over Bridgeton
Academy, a PG prep school in
Maine. |
|
In the quarter final Mini game the
Jr Flyers
defeated a much improved
TriState selects
Jr B team. 3-2. Then 90 minutes
later play the Semi Final mini game. The
Jr Flyers would face the
NJ Raptors.
The Raptors advanced by defeating the
HOA Bullets
4-0 in the quarter finals. |
|
The Jr Flyers
defeated the
Raptors 1-0 in semi final mini
game. setting up a match in 20 minutes
against the NH
Monarchs #1 team. |
|
The Monarchs controlled play from the
opening faceoff, peppering goalie
Justin Fielding
throughout much of the period. Fielding,
however, was up to the challenge, and
his strong play, as well as that of the
Flyers’ defense, kept the Monarchs off
the board in the early part of the first
period. |
|
The scoreless tie was broken with 7:49
left in the first half when the puck was
sent to Jamie
Ferullo, who was stationed in the
high slot. Ferullo one-timed the puck
and caught Fielding off guard. The
Flyers, for their part had a few prime
scoring chances, but the Monarchs’
defense held them to only three shots,
all of which were deflected by
Connor Shannon.
Once the puck dropped for the second
half, the Flyers made it apparent they
would not go down easy. They put seven
shots on Monarchs goaltender
Nick Therrien,
but none of them found the back of the
net. Indeed, Therrien only let two goals
in throughout the tournament and led
with a 0.77 goals against average. |
|
Ryan
Randall made the score 2-0 with a
neat top-shelf goal from the slot, and
Ferullo
netted a goal with 3:11 remaining to
seal the game.
Aaron Kesselman and
Mike Atsalis
assisted on Ferullo’s second goal. |
|
The Monarchs
advanced after a tense 2-1 win over the
Green Mountain
Glades, which could only get
resolved after a sudden-death shootout
following overtime and a five-round
shootout.
Philadelphia, led by the strong
goaltending of
Fielding (1.92 GAA, .909 save
percentage) and Paul Kenny (who led the
tournament with a .961 save percentage),
reached the final thanks to Kenny’s
18-save shutout of the
South Jersey
Raptors team.
|
|
Eric
Millisor, an immensely talented
playmaking defenseman from the
HOA Bullets,
led the tournament in scoring with
sixteen points. His fourteen assists
also led the tournament and were double
that of second-place
David Macalino of
the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers. Macalino
and teammate Andrew Lamont tied for
second in scoring with thirteen points.
|
|
The Eastern Hockey
Showcase staff would like to
offer its congratulations to the
Monarchs and
Flyers and thank all
participating teams for making the 2008
Summer Showcase a success.

Chris Campanale Named
2008 Captain of AIC |
 |
Key Statistics:
Campanale
started to find his way as a sophomore,
posting six goals, nine assists, and 15
points in 33 games for the
AIC Yellow Jackets.
He ranked sixth in team goals and points
and eighth in assists. He saw limited
action as a freshman, posting no points

What He Does:
Campanale
has good size at 6 feet, 190 pounds. He

List student at AIC and a member of the
Atlantic Hockey
All-Academic team, majoring in

|
AIC head coach Gary Wright on

committed individual, both on the ice
and in the weight room, and his
character and coachability is beyond
reproach. We are sure glad to have him
at AIC.’’

Q&A from NJP on
Dominic Morrone |
 |
|
Dom Morrone |
|
|
Tell us about
yourself? What are
your hobbies or
interests? |
|
I grew up in
Washington Twp. and
have lived there my
whole life. I spend
my off season in Sea
Isle City at the
beach. Some hobbies
are lifting, open
hockey with my
buddies, reading and
running (I don’t
enjoy this hobby ha)
|
|
How long have you
been playing ice
hockey? Tell us what
youth teams and
levels you played? |
|
I started playing
hockey around 6 or
7. I started off
playing AA with the
Gladiators and
Hollydell
Hurricanes. Than I
moved on to AAA in
8th grade with Jr.
Flyers out of West
Chester, PA. I
played there until I
graduated. |
|
Who was your
greatest hockey
influence as you
grew up |
|
Eric Lindros. The
guy was a stud. |
|
Who was your
favorite coach on
youth teams prior to
High School and why? |
|
I would have to
say Gerry Marks. He
was my coach bantam
minor and major
year. He was all
about having fun and
developing our
skating. Younger
guys don’t want to
work on systems and
breakouts, we just
want to play games
and have fun and
that’s what we did. |

Midget Majors Ramp Up
to Championship! |
|
The Jr
Flyers Midget Major
team got off to a slow
start.
Justin Fielding first
shot on goal would be a
breakaway giving the
Suffolk Selects
skating out of the
RINX in
Hauppauge NY a
1-0 first period lead. The
scoreless 2nd period was all
Jr Flyers. They outshot
Suffolk 17-3 but goaltender
Ryan
Cummings was hanging
in tough. Finally the Jr
Flyers got on the board when
Kyle
Curley roofed a
Sean
Coll rebound to tie
the game at 1-1. Less than 2
minutes later
Matt
Grabert blew a shot
by the Suffolk goalie,
assisted by
Brian
Christie. The Flyers
appeared to be in control
until an interference
penalty lead to a Suffolk a
power play that tied the
game at 2-2. The Jr Flyers
continued to press, but with
1 1/2 minutes to play a
breakdown occurred and
Dan
O'Donohue scored on a
2 on 1. Suffolk held on to
win despite being out shot
47-22
|
|
The 2nd game
the Jr Flyers would face the
winless
NJ Huskies, a summer
select team skating out of
the
Rock Ice Pavilion in NJ.

|
One of the best games of the
tournament would be the semi
final game against the 3-0
#2
Team Kanaly. The
Team Kanaly goaltender
training formed team is
located in Southampton NJ.
This game started like the
others with another
scoreless first period. The
Jr Flyers seemed to have the
edge out shooting Team
Kanaly 12-4 after one. Then
the game started to picked
up. The Jr Flyers scored
first when
David
Macalino roofed the
puck over the goalies stick
hand. Late in the 2nd period
the Jr Flyers were called
for interference.
Matt
Grabert needed only
10 seconds to steal the puck
and score on the breakaway,
roofing the puck in the same
upper stick hand side for
the 2-0 lead. The game
continued back and forth
until 5 minutes into the 3rd

team 5-1. |
|
This was the game some
people were waiting for.
Pitting
#1
Bike Line, a team
made up of former Jr Flyers
18U and current Jr B players

not a scrub fest but a fast

winter season. The Jr Flyers
David
Macalino (Andrew Lamont)
scored first for 1-0
lead. Bike Line tied the
game 2 minutes later. The Jr
Flyers regained the lead 68
seconds later,

of the 2nd. for the 3-2
lead. The Jr Flyers had a

The
2000
Jr. Flyers Mite Major
team is off to a fast start.
With tryouts as recently as
late April and a limited
number of practices since,
the Mite Major team showed
good early chemistry and
team play in its initial
games, going 4-0-1 over the
Memorial Day weekend and
winning the championship of
the
Philadelphia Memorial Day
Shootout at Ice
Line over quality teams from
New
York, New Jersey and
Maryland. In its
first game against the
New
Jersey Revolution,
the team showed both
offensive firepower and
depth ( in amassing 47 shots
on goal, with each of its 3
lines scoring twice) and
defensive and goaltending
strength, as they prevailed
6-0. The solid defense
continued in their second
game as they defeated the
Syracuse Stars 4-0.
The third and final game of
the preliminary round
brought a tense struggle
against a game
Sound
Shore Selects team
that produced a 4-4 tie (and
hope for a rematch in the
playoffs). Entering the
playoffs as the top seed,
the 2000 squad dispatched
the
Montgomery Blue Devils
in the semifinal
round by a score of 5-3,
setting up the hoped for
rematch with the
Sound
Shore Selects in
the championship game. The
final did not disappoint as
it took overtime to decide
it with the Jr. Flyers
taking home the trophy with
a thrilling 5-4 win. The
team demonstrated admirable
resilience on a number of
occasions in the tournament
as they battled back from
behind. |
