Murray named Goalie
of the Month |
|
 |
February 2, 2006
The USHL announced today that Sioux
Falls Stampede goaltender John Murray
has been named the USHL/Goalies' World
Magazine Goaltender of the Month for
January, the second Stampede goaltender
to win the award in as many months. |
|
"This
is a great honor for me," said Murray,
whose teammate, Alex Kangas, was named
Goaltender of the Month for December.
"Obviously, my teammates' play in front
of me has a lot to do with this award;
they've been there for me all season.
The coaching staff has done a great job
of building practices around the
goaltenders, too, allowing us to get
better every day and it's paying off." |
|
"I'm
real happy for John," said Stampede
coach-GM Kevin Hartzell. "He and his
team struggled at times last year and
this acknowledgment is a testament to
his resilience and the work he put in
over the summer." |
In its mid-season
ranking of draft-eligible players,
Central Scouting has Murray ranked 18th
in its list of 30 North American
goalies.
"I'm excited to be on the list but I
would like to move up a little on it,''
he said. "I want to go in the first
three rounds because you get called down
to the podium in the first three
rounds.''
Nine goalies were taken in the first
three rounds of the 2005 NHL Draft.
If the guys at Central Scouting are
watching, so, too, are Division I
college scouts. Murray has already
received a couple of scholarship offers
from schools in the east and midwest and
is weighing the offers.
In his second season with the Stampede,
Murray has put up terrific numbers. So
terrific, in fact, that he was selected
to play in the USHL's All-Star Game Feb.
7.
Murray has an 18-2 record with one
overtime loss. He has a 2.01
goals-against average and a save
percentage of .932. He is the
No.2-ranked goalie in the league, behind
teammate Alex Kangas.
"He's kind of immune to the pressure and
obviously you have to handle pressure in
that position,'' said Stampede coach
Kevin Hartzell. "I don't know if immune
is the right word but he's pretty
resistant to it. He seems to handle
pressure well. There aren't many holes,
he makes you earn goals.'' |

Flyers Shine at Northwood Tournament |
|
|
Game-1
Jr. Flyers Vs
Chicago Mission
(Olympic Rink). The Jr Flyers were looking to
avenge themselves erasing last years showing.
Flyers opened up the tournament with a fast
skating Chicago Mission team. Chicago opened the
scoring getting their only goal 8 minutes into
the 26 minute first half. The Flyers
Brian O'Neill tied
the game with 43 seconds remaining in the first
half, scoring unassisted. The Flyers and Chicago
exchanged power plays in the 2nd half but
neither was effective. Jr Flyers
Trey Milstead
scored the game winner off a feed from
Dominic Morrone at
21:10, five minutes into the second half. The Jr
Flyers held on to the lead and went on to win
the game 2-1 despite being out shot 26-22.
Mike Milano was the
difference. He was strong in net and his team
mates added in some fine defensive plays making
the Jr Flyers team hard to beat.
NOTES: Dan Sullivan was
ill and did not make the trip. Chicago Mission
coach, Brad Saban, stated Milano was the best
90's goalie they have played all year. |
|
Game-2
Jr. Flyers Vs
Washington Nationals
(NHL Rink). Facing the AJHL Washington Nationals
Jr team the Jr Flyers felt they had something to
prove to the local hockey world. The Flyers
started out on fire, Trey
Milstead scored from
Morrone and
O'Neill 3:16 into
the first half. 1990 birth year defenseman,
Taylor Morgan made
it 2-0 less than 3 minutes later assisted from
Anthony Casale and
Kyle Izett.
Washington answered back scoring a at 17:51 to
close to 2-1 only to have
Brian O'Neill score 11 seconds later
pushing the score to 3-1 assists going to
Milstead and
Morrone.
Dominic Morrone
scored again from O'Neill
and Milstead and
Trey Milstead
scored from O'Neill
to close the period out with 5-1 lead. After
Intermission Washington came out with some life
and capitalized twice on a 5/3 power play to
make the game respectable at 5-3.
O'Neill scored two
more for the Flyers pushing the game out of
reach for Washington. Each team traded late
period goals, John
Williams unassisted and
Milstead unassisted
to end the game with a 9-5 Jr Flyers win.
NOTES: Jr Flyers out shot
Washington 36-29. Fact for making the Coaches
feel old department. The coaches of the
Washington Nationals actually played against the
current Jr Flyers coaching staff. |

Game-3
Jr. Flyers Vs
Hartford Wolf pack
(Practice Rink). The hardest and toughest game
facing the Jr Flyers would be played on the
smallest rink, diminishing the Jr Flyers
advantage of speed. Winning the game would set
up a mini tiebreaker with EJHL Applecore.
Knowing what was at stake the Jr Flyers were all
over their opponents in the first half.
Hartford's older and larger players made
finishing plays harder. The Jr Flyers were
playing well and managed to shut down Hartford
without a shot on goal over the first seven
minutes of the game. Hartford used a 2 on 2 rush
to score the only goal of the first half.
Despite protests (Hartford player ran over
Milano while
scoring dislodging net) to the referee from the
Jr Flyers on the controversial goal went
unanswered. The Jr Flyers tied the game 1-1 on a
goal from Trey Milstead
from O'Neill and
John Williams. But
the 2nd half started out as all Hartford.
Hartford answered back 36 second later to retake
the lead for good. Hartford added a 3rd and 4th
goal to have a commanding 4-1 lead. The Jr
Flyers had a late rally with goals by
Anthony Casale and
Tom Newman but came
up short losing 4-3 Hartford was a good strong
team. NOTES: Jr Flyers out
shot the Wolf pack 32-21. Hartford was the
oldest team we faced have 11 1985/86 birth year
players. |
