O'Neill Scores Goal and Two Assists for Yale ECAC Championship!

The Elis, who got their 10th win over a ranked team, connected on the type of scoring play that makes the sport so beautiful to watch. Nick Jaskowiak sent the puck up the left side to Brian O'Neill, who had his head up enough to see Backman (18th goal) making a bee-line for the far post. The freshman winger fired a perfect lead pass to his outstretched linemate, who one-timed it past Ben Scrivens at 14:12.
"Brian [O'Neill] is a great player. He saw the Cornell D going to Arco [Mark Arcobello]. All I had to do was put it into the open net," said Backman, who was named the tournament's most valuable player. "I am more happy about winning than scoring three goals."
Jr Flyers Alumni Mike Matczak is also on the Yale Championship team.

Jake Javitt has kept on scoring at the college level.

Fast forward four years. The West York and Philadelphia Junior Flyers alum is a senior forward for the Robert Morris University Colonials and is still scoring at a prolific rate. His team is ranked nationally at its level. In late February, the 22-year old Javitt became the first player in the 14-year history of the program to record 200 career points. He capped the week by being named the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League's Most Valuable Player as his team was winning the ECHL title for the second consecutive season.
Javitt did it on the strength of a senior season reminiscent -- statistics-wise -- of his high-flying high school days. To date, he has scored 33 goals and dished out 52 assists in 36 games this year for the 29-7-0 Colonials, who are preparing for this weekend's American Collegiate Hockey Association national tournament as the No. 8 seed.

Javitt's 85 points, believe it or not, are only one better than linemate Luke Bennett, a sophomore hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, whose stat line reads 24-60-84.
And Javitt's third linemate, sophomore Bryan Chiavetta, is a Lower Dauphin graduate and fellow former Junior Flyer teammate, who has added 31 goals and 44 assists.
That's 244 points by one line in 36 games. As a result, RMU currently boasts three of the top seven scorers in the entire nation at the ACHA Division I level.

Jr Flyers 18U are Heading to Nationals!

The Jr Flyers Midget Major team is heading to the National Championships for the 13th year. This years National Championships will be held in Pittsburgh PA. The Jr Flyers Midget Major team has won it's 17th Atlantic League title earlier in the season. The right to go to Nationals would be the winner of a best of five series against the defending Atlantic League Champions, the NJ Colonials.

Game 1 was played Thursday night at Ice Works in Aston PA. The Jr Flyers came out of the gate flying. Sean Coll scored from Kyle Curley and Tom Seravalli just a 1 1/2 into the game. Less than 2 minutes later Kyle Curley scored from Matt O'Brien and Eric Knodel. With a little more than 4 minutes played in the game Billy Latta made it 3-0 picking the upper corner off the face off win from David Macalino. NJ changed goaltenders.

The first period ended without any more scoring. The second period was more aggressive as the Jr Flyers were assessed 4 penalties and NJ Colonials 3. Half way through the 2nd period Andrew Lamont scored the Jr Flyers 4th goal from David Macalino. Donald Oliveri added the 5th Jr Flyers goal a minute later. The Jr Flyers were up 5-0 at the ice cut.

NJ came out after the ice cut playing much more aggressively. Alex Velischek (Committed Providence D1) blasted one by Justin Fielding from the high slot just minutes into the period. Matt Willows scored a power play goal half way through the period ending the scoring for the night. Jr Flyers won game one 5-2.

Game 2 was played Saturday afternoon. This would be the best game of the series. The NJ Colonials need to win to tie the series at 1-1. The Jr Flyers struck first when Kyle Curley scored from Sean Coll and Tom Seravalli. NJ's Matt Willows scored a 2 man advantage power play goal with 2:51 left in the first to tie the game at 1 a piece. Willows scored again to give the Colonials the lead for the 1st time in the series. Billy Latta tied the game 4 minutes later unassisted. Lamont scored from Latta and Oliveri early in the 3rd for the lead. Kyle Curley scored from Seravalli and Varley for the 2 goal lead. NJ pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker only to have Latta steal the puck and score into the open net. NJ pulled their goalie again and Alex Velischek scored to close the game to 5-3. NJ continued to play with the extra attacker until Sean Coll stole the puck and scored into the empty net. Final score was 6-2. Jr Flyers out shot the NJ Colonials 27-26.

Game 3 was played Sunday morning. This game would be a let down from the previous two games. NJ Colonials did not field a full bench. Players decided to stay home to rest for the High School Playoff game scheduled for Sunday evening. The NJ Colonials Tom Croonquist scored first and Sean Coll from Brian Newman scored a minute later for a first period 1-1 tie. After a regroup on the bench David Macalino scored two goals on his first shift of the period. Croonquist added his 2nd of the game to close within one until Brian Christie scored and Tom Seravalli added another in the third for a 5-2 final.     NOTE: Justin Fielding was strong in net for the Jr Flyers.    Coaches at the game: Hobart D-3, Worcester State D-3, Neumann D-3, Saginaw Spirit OHL

Jr Flyers Advance to Semi Finals in Madison Tournament!

The Jr Flyers opened the tournament against traditional power, Culver Academy. Culver is a military prep school located in Indiana. The Jr Flyers jumped on Culver scoring 5 first period goals. Billy Latta opened the scoring unassisted, followed by Tom Seravalli from Zack Sarig. Sarig then blasted one past from the blue line past the stunned goaltender. Latta scored his 2nd from Lamont and Matt O'Brien scored the 5th from Kyle Curley. Culver's Scott Snyder scored with a minute left in the first to spoil Justin Fielding shutout bid. Andrew Lamont scored the only goal in the 2nd period from Sarig just 3 minutes in. The 3rd period the Jr Flyers broke it open with David Macalino scoring the 7th goal and Matt O'Brien added his 2nd from Sean Coll. Culver scored 2 late goals to finish the game with an 8-3 score.  NOTE: shots were 42-31 in favor of the Jr Flyers

Game number two was against the Chicago Fury a team from the Chicago division of the Mid West Elite Hockey League. Chicago opened the scoring when team stat leader Alex Kubiak put one in at the 8 minute mark. The Jr Flyers stormed back 23 seconds later when Sean Coll scored from Kyle Curley and Eric Knodel to tie the game at 1-1. Billy Latta put the Jr Flyers in the lead when he scored assist from David Macalino. Matt O'Brien added another to open a two goal lead. Chicago would score with 27 left in the period to close the game back to one. Chicago's Jackson Bray tied the game early in the 2nd period at 3-3. Latta from Lamont scored 1 1/2 minutes later to put the Jr Flyers up 4-3 and Brian Christie added some insurance scoring from Conner Varley. The Jr Flyers would need this goal when Chicago's Bray added his 2nd with 4 minutes left in the period. The penalty filled 3rd period slowed play down and the Jr Flyers were able to hold Chicago off the board for the 5-4 win.  NOTE: Chicago out shot the Jr Flyers 31-22.

Game three would be mostly a verbal battle against the #1 team LA Kings from the West Division of the Midwest Elite League. LA's Kevin Fraize would open the scoring with 6 minutes left in the 1st period and just 3 minutes later Jake Campbell added another. The Jr Flyers needed to regroup after the ice cut stop worrying about the nonsense going on and get back to playing hockey. The Jr Flyers went back to work with 5:13 left in the 2nd period Kyle Curley got the Jr Flyers on the board with the assist from Zack Sarig. Andrew Lamont then tied the game less than a minute later, again an assist to Sarig. Brian Christie with assistance from Dan Dupell scored his 2nd game winner in a row with less than 10 minutes left to play. Sean Coll added the empty netter from Tom Seravalli and Eric Knodel for a 4-2 final.  NOTE: The LA Goalie was the best goaltender we faced this year. Jr Flyers out shot LA 56 to 27.

The Semi Final Game was against the Chicago Young Americans the #1 team in the Chicago Division of the Mid West Elite Hockey League. The Young American defeated Honeybaked the top team in the Detroit division, in OT to advance to play the Jr Flyers. The Jr Flyers Sean Driscoll opened the scoring with an assist from Billy Latta and Eric Knodel just 3 minutes into the game. Unfortunately this would be the only offense the Jr Flyers would get. Chicago's Curry tied the game at 1-1. After the ice cut the Jr Flyers were on the power play Mike Fallon cut across the blue line and bounced one in past Justin. Then Fallon scored his 2nd on a nice power play tip in goal that Justin had no chance on. The final goal was a breakdown on power play rush leading to a 2 on 1 shorthanded goal scored by Tim O'Brien. Final 4-1  NOTE: Chicago out shot the Jr Flyers 34-26. Overall a good weekend, a few of the players were able to showcase themselves to the USHL, NAHL, OHL, and College scouts in attendance. Because of their weekend play a few of the players were offered tryouts with USHL teams

Jr Flyers Mite Major Team President Day Tournament Champions!

JR FLYERS MITE MAJOR TEAM TAKES CENTRAL MASS OUTLAWS PRESIDENTS DAY TITLE - The Philadelphia Jr. Flyers mite major (2000) team, still feeling the effects of recent illnesses affecting a number of players, displayed great courage and determination over the Presidents Day weekend in capturing the championship of the 8-team Mite Division in the 8th Annual Central Mass Outlaws Presidents Day Classic at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Massachusetts.  The team went 5-1 over the four days of the tournament, beginning with a 4-1 win on Friday night over the host team, the Central Mass Outlaws.  They returned to the ice early on Saturday morning and met a determined Tewksbury (MA) Red Rangers team that took a 1-0 lead into the third period and held it until the persistent Flyers scored to knot the game with 7:05 remaining.  Not to be denied, the Flyers scored the game winner with 3:38 left to gain their second win in the preliminary round.  That afternoon, playing their third game in less than 24 hours, the Flyers met a disciplined New Hampshire Avalanche team in a back and forth game that was tied at 2-2 in the third period until, with 5:41 left in the game, the Flyers surrendered the go-ahead goal.

Feeling the cumulative effects of three tournament games on top of lengthy travel and earlier illness, the Flyers yielded 2 more goals in the final minutes to suffer its first defeat, 5-2.  On Sunday morning, in their final preliminary round game, the rested Flyers dominated play over three periods in marching to a convincing 3-0 win over the West Seneca (NY) Wings, advancing to the four-team playoff round with the 2nd seed.  In their semifinal on Sunday afternoon, they would again meet the West Seneca Wings as the 3rd seed.  This time, with a place in the final at stake, the two teams put on a show to remember.  After falling behind early as West Seneca scored first, the Flyers responded with two goals later in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, and then added another in the second to enter the third period with a 3-1 lead.  West Seneca managed a goal with 9:59 left to pull within one and then scored a heartbreaking tying goal with 16 seconds left to send the game into sudden death overtime.  In an overtime which no one who was there will ever forget, the two teams battled through five minutes of 5 on 5, five more minutes of 4 on 4, and then an unbelievable fifteen minutes, thirty seconds of 3 on 3, before the game was decided by a thrilling Flyers goal to end the marathon.  The overtime was marked by West Seneca's goaltender repeatedly denying Flyers scoring chances until overly aggressive play produced a clear breakaway for West Seneca and only a spectacular save by Flyers goaltender Eric West preserved the Flyers hopes.  Advancing with confidence to Monday morning's final against the Westchester (NY) Express (a 3-1 semifinal winner over the New Hampshire Avalanche), the Flyers would not let this chance for a championship slip through their fingers and produced another solid three periods and a 2-0 win, their second shutout of the tournament.

Jr Flyers Have Good Showing At Northwood Tournament!

Starting the tournament would be a rematch against CEGEP Saint Foy, a Canadian Prep team that defeated the Jr Flyers in the Warrior Classic 3-1. Saint Foy opened the scoring when Maxime Latraverse scored. The Jr Flyers tied the game when Donald Olivieri scored from David Macalino two minutes later. Dany Laberge scored to put Saint Foy back in the lead with 6 minutes left in the half. Connor Varley scored minutes later to tie the game at 2-2. In the 2nd half Macalino scored from Billy Latta and Zach Sarig to take the lead 3-2. Saint Foy kept coming and Frιdιrick Lacroix tied the game with 15 minutes left to play. With less than four minutes to play Andrew Lamont scored from Brian Christie and Varley to put the Jr Flyers in the lead for good.    NOTE: Saint Foy out shot the Jr Flyers 22-16 (GAME SCORE SHEET).

The 2nd game of the tournament would be another rematch against National Sports Academy. NSA defeated the Jr Flyers 6-4 while on their way to winning the Warriors Classic tournament. This game would be very similar. NSA opening the scoring late in the first half when Chris Snyder scored his first with five minutes remaining in the 25 minute half. Four minutes after the ice cut Chris Snyder scored his 2nd goal to put NSA up 2-0. With half the 2nd period gone David Macalino scored from Andrew Lamont and Billy Latta to get the Jr Flyers on the board. Latta scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2.    NOTE: Jr Flyers out shot NSA 44-24 (GAME SCORE SHEET)

Game three would be against the New England Falcons, a .500 Jr B team from the Empire Jr Hockey League. This game decided if we were playing Sunday or riding the bus home early. Dan Kasper opened the scoring three minutes into the game. Andrew Lamont from Billy Latta scored a minute later and the game looked like it could be a romp. On a controversial play, our goaltender, Justin Fielding, was checked out of the play, and Mitchell Akey used the opportunity to put one in for the Falcons. Sean Driscoll got it back when he scored a power play goal from Donald Olivieri and Connor Varley. The Jr Flyers were up 3-1 with only eight minutes played. Play settled down going back and forth until some sloppy play led to Alan Martin scoring with 40 second left in the half to close the game to one 3-2. Surprisingly the game settled down as the Falcons played a trap the 2nd half to shut all offense down. Billy Latta scored unassisted with just 13 seconds left into the open net for the 4-2 victory.    NOTE: Jr Flyers out shot the Falcons 55-24 (GAME SCORE SHEET)

The Semi Finals would put the Jr Flyers against Northwood (Host) for the 3rd year in a row. Northwood won the semi Finals in 2007, Finals in 2008 and now the Semi Finals in 2009. This game was Northwood all the way. The Jr Flyers could not stop the bleeding in a 7-0 rout. This would eliminate the Jr Flyers and see Northwood advance to the Finals against Wyoming Seminary.     NOTE: Jr Flyers out shot Northwood 30-21. (GAME SCORE SHEET PENALTIES NOT RECORDED).     Northwood went on to win their tournament with a 5-1 win over Wyoming Seminary out shooting them 36-14. (GAME SCORE SHEET).     Northwood has a killer power play scoring 4 power play goals against Jr Flyers in Semi Finals and 4 power play goals against Wyoming Seminary in the finals.
