Junior “B” Team Departs for Nationals

In only their third season and second under Coach Dorman’s guidance the Junior “B” team is currently ranked 4th in the country in an online coaches poll and is determined to finish well at NationalsThe Junior team is working hard this week in anticipation for their trip to Marlboro, MA to play the top Junior “B” teams in the country.  Junior “B” Nationals will be held in conjunction with Tier III Junior “A” Nationals in an effort to maximize exposure for the players.

The Juniors secured their birth to Nationals by defeating the New Jersey Titans 5-4 and overcoming three separate two-goal deficits in the game. The team had many opportunities to give up but showed tremendous character and fight by scoring four goals in the third period for a gritty come from behind victory.  Coach McCreary comments, “The only obstacles these young men will see in life are the ones they set for themselves.  They know what it takes to be champions on and off the ice and how to overcome adversity.”  The goal of this group from day one has been a trip to Nationals and the players would accept nothing less.  Coach Dorman would like to express his heartfelt appreciation for everyone involved with the Junior Flyers and Ice Line staff.

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Junior Flyers Bantam Minor team by becoming this year's AYHL Playoff Champions.  This past weekend, this determined group of 94's proved to themselves and the league, they were truly the team to beat this year.

The Junior Flyers opened their playoff weekend against # 7 seed, the New Jersey Colonials.   The Junior Flyers were able to defeat the Colonials by a score of 3-1.    After a good night's rest, the Junior Flyers awoke early Sunday morning to face their Philly rivals, the Little Flyers.  The Little Flyers were hungry to get their first win against the Junior Flyers this season.  However, they would have to wait until next season as the Junior Flyers soared end to end on the ice, beating the Little Flyers by a score of 3-1. With two wins behind them, the Junior Flyers knew they had one last task at hand:  beat the North Jersey Avalanche.

Juniors Gear Up for Playoffs!

Headed into the playoffs with a first round bye and week off you can be sure the Junior Flyers Juniors are prepared to take the ice for their second round match-up against the New Jersey Rockets this Thursday evening.  The game will take place at the Prudential Center which is home to the NHL New Jersey Devils while games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be played at Ice Line on Saturday and Sunday.  The Rockets paved their way to the second round with a thrilling 2 game sweep of last years Keegan Cup Champions, the Valley Forge Minutemen.  Game one was won with 1 second remaining in regulation play while game 2 was decided in overtime.

The Juniors secured a first round bye with a Division best 31-5 record while going 16-1 down the stretch.  In their last New England Showcase of the season the Juniors went 3-0 dismantling teams by a combined score of 23-3.  In an online coaches poll the Juniors boast a #5 ranking in the country.
Headed into the playoffs goaltending and team defense will be the key to the Juniors success.  Jimmy Murray has led the way between the pipes with a 90.2 save percentage with Andrew Miller and rookie David Donzanti coming in at a close second tied with an 89.8 save percentage.  Up front the squad is led by veteran players Wes Bonnell (42-30-33-63 pts) and two time captain Shane Golden (41-12-26-38 pts).  Several key rookies have played well beyond their years contributing from day one and will be looked upon to continue their Herculean efforts throughout the playoffs.  Rookie Adam Graff enters the play-offs averaging a point per game (42-22-20-42 pts) with Justin Decowski coming in with 38 points in 41 games and assistant captain Greg Ludwig amassing 37 points in 41 games played.  With only one veteran defenseman from last years squad that went 31-11 the Juniors looked to several rookies to step up and play key minutes for the team.  Returning defenseman Stephen Rosenman has been a stalwart all year long while MET League All-Stars Matthew DeLuca and Jonathan Stauffer have contributed admirably as well.

Jr Flyers Alumni, Brandon Jackmuff Up for Award!

Willams College's Brandon Jackmuff, a Jr Flyers Alumni, is one of 16 semifinalists for the 8th Annual Joe Concannon Award. (New England's Best American-born Division II-III hockey player)

Jackmuff was the only player selected from the Williams Ephs. He leads the team with 23 points and his seven power play goals represent over one-third of his team's total this season. Jackmuff is fourth among New England Small College Athletic Conference players in points and goals scored (12). He also has a team-high 11 assists this year.

"I had no idea I had a chance to be nominated," said Jackmuff. "It's rare that someone from our school is. "It's an incredible honor considering how many good players are on my team they're all the best players from their high schools. It's kind of overwhelming." Of the 16 semifinalists, six candidates compete in the NESCAC, so Jackmuff is familiar with his fellow nominees. "I've been playing against most of them for the past four years, and those are the best players I've been up against they're the ones who stand out," said Jackmuff. "If I was to be recognized as the best American-born player in New England, that would be quite an accomplishment."

Head coach Bill Kangas agreed that if anyone from the team deserved to be selected, it was Jackmuff. "Brandon's one of the best players in the league," said Kangas. "He's fast and tenacious, so when he gets around the net in open space, he's dangerous." Jackmuff isn't the loudest player on the ice, but the senior captain is very intense with an incredible work ethic. "When Brandon speaks he has the attention of the entire team," added Kangas. "He leads in his own way. He's funny and real personable he has a great way of bringing the team together." While Jackmuff isn't really thinking about the announcement later this month with playoffs going on this week, the nomination still ranks high on his list of achievements.

Said Jackmuff: "There's conference awards and team awards, but this is the only award that's been mine."

Mite Major (1999) Team Wins Again!

The Philadelphia Jr Flyers Mite Major Team Goes Undefeated in a Squirt A Tournament. The Mite Major team put on a dominant showing going undefeated and outscoring their opponents 11-2 as they played up in a field of 6 Squirt A teams in Pittsburgh over President’s Day Weekend.  Starting strong, the Jr Flyers won their first game 5-0 over the Findlay Oilers.  The Jr Flyers kept constant pressure on the Cincy Cyclones in the second game, but Cincy’s netminder was able to hold-off a barrage of shots as the Jr Flyers had to settle for a 1-1 tie.

The Jr Flyers clinched the #1 seed and a first round bye with a 2-1 victory over the N. Pittsburgh Wildcats Squirt A major team. The Championship game provided a re-match with the Cincy Cyclones. However, the Jr Flyers’ relentless puck movement and smothering defense was too much for the Cyclones as the Jr Flyers won 3-0.

Mite Minor (2000) Team are Champions Again!

Congratulations are in order to the 2000 Philadelphia Jr Flyers Mite Minor team. Winner of the 2008 President’s Day Ski and Skate Classic held in Scranton PA.  They started the tournament off by defeating the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Knights 8-1. Next the Jr Flyers defeated the Connecticut Southern Stars 8-0. After the round robin games the Jr Flyers mites faced off against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team recording a Semi Final victory. The Championship game would be a hard fought contest between the Jr Flyers Mite Minors and the West Seneca Wings from NY. The Jr Flyers would draw first blood scoring in the first period to take the 1-0 lead. The game continued to go back and forth with each team trading scoring opportunities. With three minutes left to play in regulation, the NY team was awarded a penalty shot. Goaltender Ben Hemrick stopped the penalty shot. Ben along with his Jr Flyers team mates secured the win with great team play during the rest of the game.

This tournament win adds another championship to an already impressive tournament season. The 2000 Jr Flyers Mite team are also the Champions of the Stamford Fall Classic along with Champions of the Crab town Showdown. Congratulations to all players, coaches and parents for a great season.

Notes: Ben Hemrick was voted Tournament MVP. This is quite an honor for the young goaltender.

Injuries stop Midget Majors in Madison.

The Jr Flyers limped into the Gold Medal Classic in Madison, WI hosted by the Madison Capitols AAA. In the first game playing with 3 lines and 4 defensemen the Jr. Flyers used some great goaltending by Paul Kenny to defeat the Texas Attack 4-2 (Division Winners). Unfortunately this would be the high light of the weekend. The Jr Flyers suffered another set back with an injury to defenseman Bob McInerney. Next the Jr Flyers faced the Russell Stover Stars, a top level team from Kansas City. The Flyers trailed 1-0 going into the 3rd period but after wining the morning game, a college tour of Wisconsin University and playing with only 3 healthy defensemen the fatigue was starting to set in. The final was Russell Stover 5, Jr Flyers 1. The final game of the round robin would be against Team Illinois. Because Texas and Stover beat TI it set up a win you have 1st place or lose you have last place situation for the Jr Flyers. The Jr Flyers were tired and it showed. Paul Kenney made a great pad save on a TI breakaway only to have the puck bounce off a Jr Flyers defenseman into the net. At the ice cut the Jr Flyers trailed 3-0, but the third period was not any kinder to the Flyers. Final score was 7-1 Team Illinois. In the consolation game was against the Colorado Outlaws. The Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see it disappear in the 3rd and a 3-2 defeat.

Notes: LA Selects won the tournament over Dallas Stars 2-1. Dallas beat Shattuck in OT 4-3 to win division. San Jose Jr. Sharks beat Shattuck in consolation game 3-1. The return trip home to Philadelphia was exciting when the plane was hit by lightning. Lucky for us no damage was done and everyone arrived home safe.

John Williams Accepts Scholarship to UConn
The Quesnel Millionaires are pleased to announce that John Williams has committed to the University of Connecticut. Williams came to Quesnel part way through last season and leads the team in scoring this year with 26 goals, 32 assists for 58 points and has been in the top 20 of league scoring all season.

Coach Tom Bohmer is very excited and happy for the organization and John, as he understood what it took as far as his physical commitment and approach to the game to go out and earn a Division 1 Scholarship. Williams, the Team Captain, has been a leader for us, both on and off the ice this season and he’s been a great role model for our younger players, showing what hard work and perseverance will allow players to accomplish.
