Junior Team Enjoys Boston University
Tour from Coach Jack Parker |
|
The Junior Flyers Jr’s Enjoy
Boston University Tour from
Legendary Coach Jack Parker,
Send 6 Players and a Coach to
All-Star Game, and Ride a
13-Game Unbeaten Streak.
|
|
How much can occur for one team
in just over a month and a half
span? Well, how about a 13 game
unbeaten streak, a tour of
Boston University from legendary
coach Jack Parker, attending a
BU verse Vermont hockey game,
six players selected to the
MET
League All-Star game, attending
an Army verse Canisius hockey
game at West Point and a
College/Junior A showcase with
the EJ, AJ
and
Empire Hockey Leagues.
|
|
After all that, the Junior
Flyers Juniors find themselves
sitting atop the
Metropolitan Junior Hockey
League with a 25-5 league
record and 32-8 record overall
as they gear up for the
playoffs. |
|
With a short bench, the last
loss the Juniors endured came at
the hands of a skilled and fast
Wyoming
Seminary Prep, 3-2, on
December 1st. During the
Juniors unbeaten streak they
would avenge that loss with
their full line-up this time
taking down the strong prep
squad, 7-2. The Juniors came
out early establishing a
physical presence against a
roster that consists of players
from 7 states and 3 countries.
The Junior Flyers took an early
lead and would not relent,
outshooting the Blue Knights
38-18. With a balanced attack
and an overall team effort the
Junior squad was led with
2-point performances from
Adam Graff
(2 G), Jon Stauffer (2 A), Wes
Bonnell (2 A), Justin Decowski
and Ryan Frear (1 G and 1 A).
Wyoming Sem was led by
Kaz
Iwamoto (1 G and 1 A) who
hails from
Hokkaido, Japan and plays
on the Japanese U20 National
Team. |

Jr. Flyers Midgets
defeat Tri State Selects |
|
After having the weekend off the
Jr Flyers returned to action
with a rare Tuesday week night
game Vs the Tristate Selects Jr
B team. This was the Jr Flyers
return match in a home and home
match up. The Jr Flyers won the
earlier game using 5 power play
goals on the 8-5 win. |
|
Playing in front of a home crowd
the Jr Flyers wasted no time.
Alex
Cottle scoring the first
goal 17 seconds into the game
from Ikkla
and
McDyre. Three and half
minutes later
Andrew
Dadds scored a power play
goal assisted by
Cottle
and
McInerery. Halfway
thought the first period
Tristate blocked a shot and
McFillin scored on the short
handed breakaway assisted by
Kennedy. The Jr Flyers opened it
up when
Tim McMenamin scored with
4:36 left (Barthelmess,
Gregoire).
Cole
Ikkala added another 16
seconds later (Cottle).
Chad
Barthelmess (McMenamin)
added a power play before the
period ended for a 5-1 lead.
|
|
The 2nd period was an uneventful
defensive period as both teams
traded goals.
Chad
Barthelmess (Dadds)
scored another power play goal.
Tristates tally came from
Kennedy (McFillin). |
|
After an ice cut the Jr Flyers
came out flying and so did
Tristate. The Jr Flyers struck
first Rob
McDyre scoring
(Cottle).
Half way thru the period the Jr
Flyers scored 3 Power Play goals
in two minutes to put the game
away. Nick
Seravali (Macalino, Knodel),
Kevin Murray (Latta), and Murray
again (Latta). Cole Ikkala
added the 11th
unassisted. Tristate added their
own power play goal by Zitarelli
(Steffan, Wynn). to make the
final score 11-3. |
|
Tristate had 12 team penalties
to the Flyers 6 team penalties.

Jr. Flyers Fall Short
in Championship at Northwood! |
|
The Jr.
Flyers Midget Major team
has been attending the
prestigious
Northwood
Prep Tournament since
1997. In those 12 years there
have been some exciting games.
The
2001-02 team defeated a
very talented
EJHL Jr
Bruins team 3-2, knocking
them out of championship
contention. Having
Peter
Masters call for a
rematch the next year with our
2002-03
team only to have
Joe
Viscuse score with 1
second left to tie them 3-3.
Again knocking them out of the
championship. The
2005-06
team faced off against
teams from the
Jr A AJHL
league for the first
time. They shocked the
Washington
Nationals by winning 9-5
and playing another close game
in a 4-3 loss to the
Hartford
Wolfpack.
|
|
The
2006-07 team reached the
Semi Finals, a feat non of the
other Jr Flyer team have done.
After defeating
NSA
(5-3) and the
NJ Titans
Jr B team (7-2) the Jr
Flyers would take on the top
team in the
AJHL,
the 28-2-1
NY Bobcats. The Jr Flyers
stunned the hockey community as
they defeated the Bobcats 5-3,
only to lose the semi Final game
to
Northwood 3-2. |
|
The
2007-08 Jr Flyers Midget 18U
team kept tradition
going. Defeating
National
Sport Academy (Prep
School).
Tim McMenamin (Barthelmess,
Silberstein) opened the
scoring. NSA scored two to take
the lead. Until
Eric
Knodal (McInerney, Macalino)
scored on the power play
and one minute later
Tim
Silberstein (Barthelmess)
put us up 3-2.
Cole
Ikkala (Cottle, Knodal)
scored the only goal of the 2nd
half for the 4-2 win.
Conner
Brogan had 25 saves. |
|
The 2nd game was high scoring
and played on the Olympic rink.
The NE
Falcons Jr B team
(Empire) was going through a
rough time at the tournament.
The Falcons scored 1st taking a
short lived lead.
Robby
McDyer (Ikkala) scored
less than 2 minutes later to tie
the game.
Alex Cottle (McDyer, Ikkala)
scored on the power play to give
the lead to Philadelphia.
Cole
Ikkala (Cottle, Dadds)
added another followed by
Chad
Barthelmess (McInerney,
McMenamin) ending the
half 4-2. The Flyers opened it
up scoring 4 more in the 2nd
half for the 8-3 win.
David
Macalino (Latta, Gregoire), Eric
Knodal (Barthelmess), Chad
Barthelmess unassisted
and Nick
Seravalli (Scannella) on
the power play.
Paul Kenny
had 17 saves for the game. |
|
Game #3 was the most exciting
from a fans point of view. The
Hampton
Roads Junior Whales team
was not what everyone was
expecting. This Independent team
located in Virginia had 14
players from Michigan and others
from WI, CO, CA. The Whalers
while being out shot lead the Jr
Flyers 2-0 after the 1st half.
The Jr Flyers responded after
the ice cut when
Chad
Barthelmess (Knodal, McInerney)
started the scoring.
David
Macalino (Latta) tied the
game at 2-2. The Whalers scored
again to take the lead. The Jr
Flyers used a power play goal by
Billy
Latta (unassisted) to tie
the game.
Latta (unassisted) scored
again followed by
Alex
Cottle (unassisted)
shorthanded goal for a 5-3 lead.
Hampton would not be denied
scoring their 4th gal with 3.5
minutes left and tie the game up
with 2.5 minutes left. Final was
5-5.
Conner Brogan had 25
saves for the game. |
|
The 2-0-1
Jr Whalers would face
Northwood
Prep (beating
Valley
Forge Jr B 3-1 to
advance) and
Boston
Advantage (beating
Jr Titans
Jr B 5-2 to advance)
would play the Jr Flyers 2-0-1.
The Jr Flyers started this one
ready to play scoring 4 goals in
the 1st half.
Andrew
Dadds (unassisted)
shorthanded,
Tim
Silberstein (McMenamen,
McInerney), Rob McDyre
(Gregoire, Kenny), Sean Coll
(Seravalli, McInerney).
Boston Advantage scored 2 in the
2nd half before
Cole
Ikkala (Cottle, Dadds)
closed out the game.
Paul Kenny
had 22 saves for the game. |
|
While the Jr Flyers defeated
Boston 5-2 Northwood knocked off
the Jr Whalers 5-1. Reaching the
Finals for the first time was
high light of the Championship.
Northwood took a 2-0 half time
lead and stretched it into a 7-0
blanking. |
|
Congratulations to
Cole
Ikkala and
Alex
Cottle for making the All
Tournament team. Honorable
mention went to
Tim
Silberstein. |

Another Jr Flyers
Success Story! |
Dear Bud,
I find myself writing to you after all of these years,
because I
wanted to
thank you.
When Jacob
was a Senior
and Captain
of your
team, I
called you
and asked
you, "If
Jacob was
your son,
what would
you do?
Would you
try to send
him to a Jr.
A team or
would you
send him to
college?"
You replied
very
honestly, "
I would send
him to
college."
I never
forgot those
words. I
read the
Flyers
website
periodically
and
sometimes
have
regrets, but
you know,
the right
decision was
made. Jacob
is now a
Junior at
Robert
Morris
University,
Captain of
their D-I
club team as
a Jr., but
more
importantly,
a Dean's
list
student,
majoring in
Accounting.
His current
term grade
was an
astounding
3.65, with
an overall
of 3.49.
I'm writing
you because
I have seen
over the
years many,
many,
players
parent's who
have
illusions of
grandeur for
their
kids. Ed
and I
believe if
you play a
sport, you
should play
to your
absolute
potential,
but don't
let it rule
your life.
So, thank
you for your
honest words
of wisdom so
many years
ago. I knew
in my heart
what I
wanted for
Jacob, but
your words
just helped
me along.
Jacob's high
school
girlfriend
graduated
from Pitt
last year
with a
four-year
degree and
now attends
Duquense
majoring in
Law. Matt
plans on
attending
RMU next
year, also.
|
|
Anyway, I hope you remember us!
Our experience at the Jr. Flyers
was one never to be forgotten
and a life-long experience and
journey and has molded Jacob and
Matt into the men that are
today. Thank you so much.

Goers
Shines on Ice, in Classroom ! |
|
Barry Goers simply
doesn't panic. Rattle isn't in
his vocabulary. The 5-foot-9,
175-pound Goers isn't blessed
with great size, but his poise
separates him from other
defenders. "He can hold onto the
puck for that extra second and
make a play. He doesn't rush
things. He's just got the
ability out there to make things
happen and slow things down,"
said
Jeremy Dehner, UML's
other standout sophomore
defenseman. "It's a really tough
thing to do, especially in this
league because there's so many
fast players and skilled players
out there. It's a hard thing to
do, but he still manages to do
it."
Goers
(1 goal, 7 assists) is a major
reason why the young River Hawks
swept Merrimack last weekend to
improve to 4-3-4 overall. "You
really have to be on top of your
game. You can make one small
mistake and the puck ends up in
your net. You learn that pretty
quickly," he said, laughing.
"Now I feel more comfortable on
the ice. I'm not overanalyzing
things. I'm just playing because
I know what I'm doing. I
consider myself an offensive
defenseman and I like to join
the play. It's been working so
far. I'm just lucky, I guess."
Luck has nothing to do with
Goers' success, according to
MacDonald.
"He's very focused, very driven.
It carries over to everything he
does," UML's coach said. It
certainly carries over to the
classroom, as the
business
finance major compiled a 3.82
grade point average as a
freshman, one of the top GPA's
of any UML athlete. "I
guess you could say I strive for
perfection," Goers said. "I try
to be the best in anything I
do."
Opponents should not be fooled
by Goers' 175 pounds -- he's
tremendously strong and superbly
conditioned. An average shift
for a defenseman is 28-32
seconds, MacDonald said, but
Goers is able to stay on the ice
for up to two minutes and still
have the energy -- and the
competitive fire -- to battle
for loose pucks. "You know he's
gassed," MacDonald marvels, "but
he wins (the puck) with ease."

Doug Marshall
played on the

team last season
(2006-07). In an
letter to
President John
Graves Doug
writes.
|
|
First off I just
wanted to thank you
and the Jr Flyers
Organization for
giving me the
opportunity to be a
part of the Junior
Flyers program. It
was a great
experience working
with Coach
Dave Dorman.
I feel that playing
for Coach Dorman
really helped me
develop. I am
playing for the
Syracuse Stars
in the
EJHL and I am
having a terrific
season. Several
Division 1 programs
such as
Yale, Northeastern,
Niagara University,
and Union College
have already
contacted me. I
thought it would be
great for the
website,
the organization,
and for the Jr. B
program for me to
help promote the
program and to
motivate other
players into doing
the same.
|
|
|
I wouldn't be having the success
I am if it wasn't for your help
and the hard work of Coach
Dorman and the Jr Flyers
organization. Thanks for your
time and again, I appreciate
everything you did for our Jr. B
team last season, it meant a lot
to all of us. Regards,
Doug
