The 1989 Midgets entered into Ice
Line’s Memorial Day Shootout tournament at the
16U level. Their first game together as a Jr.
Flyer team was a third period disappointment,
having a close game with Hollydel turn into an
8-3 loss. The next day the game against the
Quakers could have gone either way with the
Quakers capitalizing on a late scoring chance to
win 3-2. With a 5-2 win over the Florida
Panthers under their belt the 89’s had a rematch
with the Quakers, Quakers had tied top seeded
Hollydel 1-1 the previous day. The Quakers won
again ousting the 89’s from the tournament. |
|
The greatly reduced 1990 team
roster did not seem to come into play in a 6-2
win over the Washington Crusaders. Picking up a
couple of more players, the 90’s cruised past
the Verizon and Reston Raiders teams, 6-0, and
9-1. Defeated the Little Flyers 9-1 in the semi
finals and set up a rematch with Washington
Crusaders, the other semi final winner. The
Championship game was an exciting win for the
Washington Crusaders. Some fine goaltending and
some key defensive play enabled Washington to
hold on to a 1-0 lead despite being out shot by
more than 3 to 1. |
|
The 1991 team played inconsistent
and has a great deal of work ahead in the off
season. Losing 5-0 to the eventual tournament
Champions, Team Nike. By pulling together they
were able to defeat the Patriot Selects 7-3 and
Reston Raiders 3-1 before falling to the
Washington Crusaders in the Semi finals 7-1. |
|
With a new coach the 1992 team
looked a little unsure of themselves in their
first game together. Some fumbled pucks and
kicking a puck into your own goal led to a 5-3
defeat by the Jr. Phantoms. Game 2 and game 3
the Jr. Flyers were much more poised and beat
the NJ Selects and Reston Raiders, 4-2 and 6-0.
Even in losing to the tournament champion
Hollydel 7-2 this version of the 1992 team has
improved and is already ahead of last years 92
version. |
|
The 1993 team also received a new
coaching staff. They opened the tournament with
a 3-2 win over Reston Raiders. Day two they
continued with wins over Westchester Powerade
and the Little Flyers 6-1, and 4-0. Finishing
the round robin seeded first set up a rematch
with Reston, in a hard fought battle the Jr.
Flyers won 5-3 to advance to the Championship
vs. the Little Flyers a semi final shootout
winner. The Jr. Flyers won the Championship with
a 3-2 Overtime win. |
|
Some personnel changes in the 1994
team showed some promise. The Jr. Flyers lost to
the finalist, Jr. Phantoms 3-1, defeated
Montgomery Blue Devils 2-1 and coasted by the
Washington Crusaders 9-2. A 5-3 defeat in the
semi finals by the tournament champion Hollydel
knocked the 94’s out of tournament play. |
|
The 1995 team had the best run in
becoming the tournament champions. Defeating
Westchester Powerade 7-2, Ashburn 5-2, Penn
Selects 9-1. In a tough semi final game the Jr.
Flyers squeaked by a determined LI Leafs team
3-2 before capturing the championship by
defeating Westchester Powerade 5-1. |
|
The youngest age group, the 1996
team, played hard but came out on the short end
of a 3-1 game against the tournament champion CT
Yankees. After an 8-0 and 7-3 wins against
Ashburn and Montgomery the Jr. Flyers bowed out
of the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Holleydel
in the semi finals. |

Madison Capitals tournament, a top level
invitational was the last tournament for the
players to play in front of the Jr. A scouts.
The Jr. Flyers opened the tournament with Culver
Academy the last time these organizations met
was a 3-3 tie. Culver played an unconventional
style by skating four men in the defensive zone
and a floater at the center red line. Prepared
for this type of play the Jr. Flyers were
playing well despite being out shot they were
winning 3-1 going into the third period. All
that changed after a shot from center ice red
line beat the Jr. Flyers Goaltender. Six
unanswered goals in the third period, Culver
Academy won the game 7-3. Game #2 the Jr. Flyers
Failed to hold a second period 3-1 lead against
the Dallas Stars, Dallas defeated the Jr. Flyers
5-3. Game #3 playing Suter’s Madison Capitols.
Jr. Flyers playing stronger defeat the home team
3-1. In a rushed consolation game against the
Chicago Young Americans a late third period let
down enabled a 3-3 tie. |

to preserve the shutout. |

The Northwood School Invitational
Tournament had the team traveling north.
This tournament would allow the players
to show their stuff to the college
coaches that scout the event. This 26
team tournament (18 junior teams, 5
Midget AAA teams, 2 prep schools and 1
college team) has some of the best
competition available on the East Coast.
The Jr. Flyers opened the tournament
facing the Jr. Titans Jr. Elite team.
The game plan was play tough defense and
use our speed to counter the Jr. Titans
older and larger players. The tournament
uses a 50 minute game divided into two
25 minute half’s with and ice cut in
between periods. After a slow start the
Jr. Flyers took control out shooting the
Titans team 18-4 after the first 25
minute half. The Flyers continued to
play stingy defense and exploit the
slower team. The Flyers won their first
tournament game 3-0 and out shot their
opponents 32-12. |
|
The second game would be against a
tougher Honeybaked Midget AAA team,
Honeybaked also won over Baystate
Breakers 5-0. This 8 pm showcase game
was played on center rink, the Olympic
surface. Honeybake jumped out to a two
goal lead which they held going into the
break. The Jr. Flyers came out on fire
and scored two quick goals a third tally
by Chris Campanale put the Flyers in the
lead for the first time in the game. The
Jr. Flyers could not contain the faster
skating Honeybaked team for long with
less than three minutes left, Honeybake
tied the game and some defensive zone
breakdown saw them score the game
winning with 33 seconds left. It
appeared the Honeybaked had knocked the
Jr. Flyers out of the Championship for
the second straight year. |
|
The third game was against the Baystate
Breakers, losers of the Honeybaked game
0-5 and CT Whalers 1-4. With Apple Core
beating the Honeybaked team 5-1 the Jr.
Flyers needed to win with a shutout and
score more than 5 goals. Jr. Flyers won
8-0 and moved ahead of Honeybaked into
the Consolation round of the tournament.
|
|
The Consolation game was against Empire
Jr. League Champion, Wheatfield. The
Wheatfield Jr. Team controlled the first
half scoring four goals to the Jr.
Flyers one. After a pep talk and an ice
cut the Jr. Flyers came back flying
scoring four straight goals for a 5-4
lead and put the game away 6-4 on the
empty net pushing the Jr. Flyers record
Vs Junior teams to 8-1-2 in the last
four year. |

Playing without the Malvern and LaSalle High
School players the Jr. Flyers still managed to
ring up three wins. Saturday started with an
early afternoon game against the Hill School in
Pottstown, PA. The majority of the first the
Hill School was on the power play, scoring their
first goal on a two man advantage in the first
period. Hill scored their 2nd goal in
the first period on another power play tally.
Some great individual effort by defenseman Shane
McGarry got the Jr. Flyers on the board. The Jr.
Flyers scored late in the second to tie the
score at two each. The third period was hard
hitting and fast paced only to have the Hill
School take the lead with a little more than six
minutes left. Shane McGarry again stepped up his
play up and scored with three minutes left to
tie his former team 3-3. With the clock winding
down play was going up and down the ice. It
looked like the two teams would play overtime,
but some heavy forechecking by the Flyers and a
costly Hill turnover ended up on Chris Brennan
stick. Chris put the game away 4-3 for the
Flyers scoring the forth goal with less than a
minute to go in regulation beating Hill School
for the 2nd straight year. With less
than four hours between games the Jr. Flyers
headed down 422 for a league game against the
Valley Forge Minutemen. The Flyers numbers had
dropped lower after the Hill game. Playing with
two forward lines and four defensemen the
Minutemen gave the Jr. Flyers everything they
could handle. The Jr. Flyers trailed by a goal
going into the third period only some late
heroics saved this come from behind 5-4 league
win. Sunday’s rematch with Minutemen was
not much of a game as the rested Jr. Flyers won
easily 11-0. |
