| The Junior Flyers wish Eric good luck, well maybe not too much good luck! | |||||
The Jr. Flyers Midget Majors will advance to the 2012 National Championships in Buffalo, NY. After finishing 2nd in the AYHL. the Jr. Flyers qualified to square off against the 1st place Team Comcast in a best of three Atlantic District Championship.
In the series opener
Ron Groff scored the only goal of the game off a
face off win by Cory Daszkiewicz. The quick shot
beat the Comcast goalie and Nick Stuart stopped all
shots to hold on to a 1-0 Jr. Flyers win.
In the second game of the best of three. Comcast scored first
off a rush created by a defensive breakdown. The first period ended
1-0 Comcast. In the second Comcast scored its 2nd goal, a short
handed tally from the right side making it 2-0, Comcast. With
minutes remaining in the period, Steve Cantando,
scored to end the period with the Jr. Flyers only down by one. After
some great fore checking by the Covach-Menta-Abarca
line, Michael Covach tied the game at 2 walking out
of the corner and beat the Comcast goaltender. The period remained
scoreless. In the 3rd overtime period, Captain Matt Menta
gained control of the puck in the left corner went behind the net,
came out the right side and managed to put it behind the Comcast
goaltender for the overtime victory 3-2.
Notes: Key plays of the seriers. Jon Thompson hit at center ice in game 1. Jeff Beck hit at the Offensive Blue line in game 1. Great team Penalty killing by many players, not allowing a power play goal against all weekend. Nick Stuart play all weekend and stopping the Comcast breakaway in the 3rd period of game two with the game tied 2-2. Steve Cantando playing limited time stepping up to get the Jr Flyers on the Scoreboard. The whole team coming together to support each other.

Springfield Jr. Blues,
proud member of the North American Hockey League, adds to their outstanding tradition of player signing.
Michael Covach and
Matt Menta, dominant players for the
Philadelphia Jr. Flyers in the Tier 1 Elite League, signed tenders with the Blues this past week.
“We are proud to sign these player, they are two of the top players in the country and are line mates,” said
Head Coach Joe Dibble. “Watching these two play together is always a pleasure.”
Covach, a power forward, so far in 33 games has 27 goals and 12 assists. His line mate, Menta, currently has 9 goals and 20 assists in the same amount of games.

The Philadelphia Junior Flyers of the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League announced this weekend the naming of two Junior Flyers (Buchan, Zamchalov) to the 2012 MJHL All-Star Game in Ioria, Mass. Four Junior Flyers were named to the MJHL Prospects (Ahmadi, Best, Owens, Fazen) All Star Game rosters.

The Philadelphia Junior Flyers of the Atlantic Youth Hockey League announced this weekend the naming of three Junior Flyers (Ott, Seningen, Garner) to the 2012 AYHL Bantam Major All-Star Game. Five Junior Flyers (Flocken, Hirneisen, Hallman, LeClair, Butala) were named to the AYHL Bantam Minor All-Star Game. Both games will be held at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT.

Bud Dombroski and the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers would like to congradulate the four Jr. Flyers players selected to practice with Youngstown (USHL) this week. 18U Midget Major players Jesse Abarca, Michael Covach and Matt Menta and from our 16U National team Nick Master. Each player will meet with the General Manager, Jason Koehler, take a tour of the Covelli Centre, game facility, and participate in an on ice practice with the team.

Ian Walsh, a current NHL Referee, will work the 2012 Winter Classic in Philadelphia. Ian is a former Jr Flyer. He played for the Jr Flyers Midgets and Bud Dombroski in the 1990's. Ian is still the current Jr Flyers Midget team single season penalty record holder at 167 minutes in a regular season.
Brian Christie wins a faceoff and scores a game winning goal all with 1.1 seconds left on the clock in overtime. The Topeka RoadRunners defeated the Corpus Christi Ice Rays 3-2 on Friday, December 2, 2011 in NAHL action at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX. This video shows the goal first at full speed, then slowed down. The puck went between the goalies right arm and his body.
Hingham Mass: The Jr. Flyers 18U team showed well in its first Elite League showcase of the season, going 2-1-1 and have taken over first place in the Tier 1 Atlantic Division. The Jr. Flyers opened the showcase against the League Leading Buffalo Jr. Sabers. The Jr. Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 fast lead and only a disallowed offside goal prevented the Sabers from falling behind 4-0. Pulling their starting goaltender the Sabers fought back to earn a 3-3 tie and remain unbeaten. Nick Steward was strong in goal as the Jr. Flyers were out shot 36-29. Game 2 was another strong outing against TPH Thunder out of Atlanta, a new member of the T1 Elite league. TPH struck first and lead after the first. The Jr. Flyers scored 2 in the 2nd and another in the 3rd to skate off with a 3-2 victory. Out shooting TPH 38-28. Game 3 was against cross state rival the Pittsburgh Hornets. Steve Cantando Scored to give the Jr. Flyers the lead but Pittsburgh answered back with 2 of their own. Ron Groff scored short handed on a nice steal by Menta to tie the game. Pittsburgh won the game by scoring its 2nd PP goal of the game late in the 3rd. Jr. Flyers out shot Pittsburgh 32-28 in the losing effort. The final game of the showcase was a high light game for Jr. Flyers goaltender Lewis Brotman. Lewis stopped 50 of the 51 shots he faced allowing the team to score on the Ohio goalie. Jr. Flyers were out shot 51-34.
Notes: Scouts in attendance were interested in Showcase leading scorers Matt Menta and Michael Covach more than one had asked questions. These scouts will follow them in future showcases and games to see if the trend continues. The Jr. Flyers goaltending out performed our opponents this showcase. Continued performance will increase people knowing just who they are.
